Full disclosure: I knew where and when I was getting engaged, but I did not know how he was going to do it. We’re very much a team ad we suck at keeping secrets from each other, so walking hand-in-hand into engagement together was very fitting for us .
He took me to a gorgeous arboretum. As soon as we got out of the car, he handed me a black ringbox containing a glass shamrock, and a note from a leprechaun saying that he had stolen my ring!
We walked all around the arboretum, and when I stopped to look at stuff, he would hide a sparkly green chinese takeout box behind a tree and prompt me to find it. Each box had a note from the leprechaun attached to it, and a small gift related to the note inside.
Then he made me sit down on a bench, handed me a book, and told me to read it while he went to “go talk to a guy.” The book was a hollow book containing a leprechaun figure, plastic gold coins, more glass shamrocks, one real sixpence from 1913, and a note from the leprechaun saying that he had sold the ring on craigslist lol.
He came back and said that the guy he had been talking too was very short and dressed funny . Next, he gave me a storybook he made. It was a “happily ever after” sort of story illustrated by stickers of all my favorite things.
He then took me to a patch of evergreen trees (evergreens are significant to us), told me to put the sixpence in my shoe for practice, got down on one knee, gave a speech, and proposed! I said “yes,” of course
Oh, and all of the notes from the leprechaun rhymed! He’s very clever lol.
Another cute thing: He wore a dark gray T-shirt because in the Taylor Swift song “Today Was A Fairytale,” one of the lines is “Today was a fairytale, I wore a dress, you wore a dark gray T-shirt” lol (sadly, I was not wearing a dress haha).
He went above and beyond anything I could have ever expected.
Here is the ring. It was my great-grandmother’s! 18kt white gold, milgrain open filigree and hand-engraved scroll and wheat designs, old European cut diamond (I thnk it’s about a half carat?):
