I am so happy I can start posting on here now. I have had this site bookmarked for a while but now that I am engaged (eek!) I want to contribute. I haven’t picked an actual date yet but we are thinking about early next July (2012) so that I will have graduated college. I guess my question is just what are the first steps? I have heard to register long before the wedding, and I want to do engagement announcements, but there is just so much to think about even with the wedding being a year away. My FH and I have been together for 3.5 years and we knew that we would be getting married one day but I never anticipated how much things would change when he proposed!
If anyone can throw out a few tips it would be much appreciated!

1.) guest list (for head count so you know what to look for in a venue)
2.) Venue, VEnue, VENUE!
3.) Wedding Dress (itll get you psyched to plan everything else)
4.) Colors and Bridesmaids dresses.
Start with that and everything else will take a life of its own

@ilovemygeek: Welcome to the hive and congrats!!!
Your first step is to establish a budget and a rough estimate of a guest list. You can’t plan anything without a budget or a rough amount of the guest list. You don’t want to fall in love with a photographer and find out they are not in your budget or fall in love with a venue and find out it’s too small for your guest list.
After that everything else will fall into place. Get the big things out of the way before you start tackling the little things.

that so exciting. congratulations. i got engaged 2 years ago and we finally have a date set this may. i would say start with a budget and guest list. from there i would look at venues for the ceremony and recpetion, as well as get a caterer, photographer, videographer, dj and all the necessary people booked as soon as possible. Sometimes they get booked up fast and you don’t want to miss out on the ones you want. As for everything else just have fun with it and everything will fall in to place for your special day.

Yes, budget is the first and most important step. I also recommend getting organized and perhaps investing in a wedding planning book to help you figure out what you need to start thinking about and when you need to consider different aspects of your wedding.
Congrats and happy planning!

First Step: Celebrate!
Then do what the other girls suggested.
As well as determine the overall feel you want for your wedding (Fancy, casual, rustic, formal, night, day). This will help guide your venue, dress, decoration etc search. This isnt necessarily a theme, so dont stress about it, but the “vibe” of the event.

Congratulations! I’m recently engaged too, and we don’t have a date yet, but it won’t be for at least two years.
