I personally think these are completely unnecessary – we told everyone who we care about in person, and if we wanted to broadcast it to the world, we could have put it on facebook. I can see the appeal of having something to frame forever though, and I guess I might do it if I had a much bigger budget.

We did it… we live in a small city where we both grew up so we knew lots of our old friends would see it. I believe it cost my parents around $40 for a black and white ad with our picture.

I’d say do it in your old towns where you grew up… Let old friends know!

We got a bunch of copies to keep as well as the newspaper emailed us the electronic copy so we could print it big for a scrapbook.

I ran out of time to do an engagement announcement, so I plan on doing a marriage announcement after the wedding.  We will just be doing my hometown, and FH’s hometown.

I still like reading these and think that you should do it if you’re interested in it. Really, it’s ONLY $40-$70 and in the scheme of weddings… that’s not much.

I did. Ours were free for our local papers.

We just did mine and FI’s hometown papers.  We live in NYC, so I figured unless we could get in the Times (impossible) it wasn’t worth it to do it here.

Since I am from such a large area I would not want it in the paper, maybe some one I did not want showing up coming! However since my fiancee is from a small town in Sweden I would not mind having one there since not many of his friends or family can make it out to California.

Are the bride and groom supposed to put them in the papers or are the parents? Do I write an annoucent that says Mr. and Mrs. Roxy annouce?

It costs WAY too much to put it in my hometown paper, and FI’s paper is the New York Times, so the only publication we’ve announced it in is the quarterly alumni newsletter from my high school, because it’s free and I wanted to rub my good fortune in the faces of everyone I disliked in school. 😛
