Perhaps a watch? They make some really nice sport watches. Or maybe cute sport-themed cuff links?

If you want to get him something that isn’t a piece of jewelry… since he was talking about wanting to build a nice home, maybe you could get him something for your home that really signifies the two of you building a home together? Maybe like a piece of art or something?

I’m giving my Fiance a PS3. I know guys love technology, so depending on what you want to spend, think about cameras, laptops, new speakers, maybe even a TV.

@Mrs. Meowerson: My moissanite was only $650, but the setting we picked was $1,200. With shipping and everything the finished ring cost a little over 2k. We figured since we got the stone inexpensively, we could spurge on the setting. I think it’s probably her setting that is making it so expensive.

Plus, a 3ct enhanced moissanite is pretty expensive all by itself, over $1000.

So I had already gotten my Fiance a really nice watch (actually 2, but that’s a whole other story) before we were engaged. He’s not a jewelry person at all but he’s a huge sports fan so I finally decided to get him a 52″ plasma screen TV. Not sure if that’d be something that your soon-to-be Fiance would be interested in or not, but just an idea 🙂

If your guy doesn’t really want stuff, I wouldn’t buy something just to “pay him back” for buying an expensive engagement ring.  Honestly, if it were me, I would be upset to get an expensive something that I didn’t want just as a pay back.  Maybe you could save up some money so that you two will be able to get a home sooner?

@Mrs. Meowerson: that was my first thought! Must be a more costly setting.

@Kat: Are you really expecting to get engaged soon? Or do you just enjoy liking to plan things out really far in advance? Given that you’re not expecting to have a wedding for another 3 1/2 years, I’m just kinda curious.

But about your question, I wouldn’t say it’s totally expected for a man to be given an engagement gift. It is a nice gesture though. But I don’t think you need to have it be something at all equal in extravagance to an e-ring, if you choose to give one at all. That being said, I did sort of give my Fiance an engagement gift. Really I just beefed up my Christmas gift budget for him and bought him an iPad, telling him it was part Christmas present, part engagment present to justify what I spent, haha.

@Kat: Oh I see! Well that’s cool, nothing wrong with long engagements as long as there’s a real commitment behind them. Ours is going to end up being 19 months. I wish it didn’t have to be that long, but… I’m also super glad we got engaged when we did. It made me feel so much more secure in our relationship and was a great choice for us, even if our wedding was still going to be a ways out.

But OMG!! I have to ask– Which JbEG setting are you wanting?? I stalk their site like it’s my job girl! Is it the Gabbie?? I have been drooling over that ever since they came out with it. I don’t even generally like halos, especially for a round, but that thing is un-freaking-believable!! I am hoping to find a good deal on an OEC stone on ebay and then set it in that someday.

I ended up buying my Fiance an authentic Blackhawks jersey that he seems to love.  I feel kinda bad b/c I got it for a great price but it wasn’t like I was “paying him back”

When my fiance and I got engaged, I got him a card with a picture in it of a beach and tropical drinks, which explained that we were going to stay a weekend on the beach in Panama City Beach.  We loved spending time there and felt like it was another celebration of our engagement. 🙂
