I had one, my mother threw one for us. I don’t know if I would have thrown one for myself but I’m very grateful she did. We are starting with nothing since we only had stuff from college so a lot of people were very generous and brought us gifts to help us get started.

My mom threw us a surprise engagement party and we had an amazing time. If someone is offering to throw you an engagement party then I would take them up on the offer, I do not believe you are supposed to throw yourself an engagement party though.

I think it depends on the situation.

Here’s why I am having one:

My fiance and I are currently living in a different province (state).  We are planning to move back at the end of the summer.  Our families/friends know we’re engaged but haven’t all had a chance to hear the story face to face or see the ring so I thought why not have everyone over and tell the story once.  Also, although we’ve been together for 3 years our families haven’t all met yet or spent much time together so this would give them an opportunity to mingle as throughout the wedding planning I’m sure they’ll be seeing more of each other.

I’m also thinking of using the engagement party as an opportunity to invite my Maid/Matron of Honor, BM’s etc to be in the bridal party.

We aren’t thinking of doing anyhting fancy just a nice backyard BBQ and we’re not expecting any gifts from anyone.  I guess its more of a get together?

Then by all means why not! I know some girls do plan their own for the reasons kit cat mentioned.

@sgwed If thats the case then definitely have one! Just make sure you’re careful about the guest list, people who go to the engagement party expect to be invited to the wedding

We had a bit of an untraditional one. We had a small wedding and couldn’t invite a lot of our friends so we had an engagement party to celebrate with them. We played wedding bingo and told our engagement story (I was living out of town at the time so it was the first time my friends got to talk to me face to face too) and did jello shots and it was fabulous.
