My Fiance insist on having an engagement party, so I decided to give a cocktail party. We live in a 1 bedroom apartment on the 1st floor. We have a little deck looking at a wooded courtyard. Im thinking cocktails and hors de vours. Should it be formal or informal?

You’re really close to your wedding date for an engagment party. Usually they are 10-18 months prior to the wedding. You would need to have it soon. If you’re in NJ that may be tough with the way the weather has been lately. I would make it informal so that if people do go outside they aren’t freezing.

Informal for sure. I had a small party with only a few close friends…they came over and cooked us dinner…it was totally “us”.

I would say informal. You should wear a dress, but your guests shouldn’t have to 🙂

We’ve decided to have it May 14th and informal sounds great. @mwitter80 We met may of last year and started dating in September and he proposed in February. We publicly announced it this month. So we’re way behind in everything…lol

@jerseyprincess: Informal sounds great!
We had an informal brunch in February (day before our 7 year dating anniversary) at FMIL’s apartment.
She has a terrace that looks out over the city. It was cold, but sunny so we took some pictures on the deck.
The informal feel was fantastic. Everyone could chat and relax while sipping mimosas and bloody marys.
I think May is a fine time for an engagement party. There’s no real rule (at least not that I know of) on when you have to have it.
