What kind of budget are you working with? Our is pretty much… well, none. But it’s important for us to have our families meet each other, so we’re going to do a pot-luck in FI’s Aunt’s back yard. Everyone can bring a dish, along with a little card that says what it is, who made it, and what their relation is to the bride/groom! Plus games like cornhole, horse shoes, bocci, backyard volleyball played completely the wrong way… you know, all that good stuff.

We’ll have fold-out tables and chairs, with plain white tablecloths. Probably some sort of balloons as centerpieces or something. I don’t particularly care about the decor of this event, but the whole thing could certainly be made a lot “classier,” if you like.

It won’t be fancy- and of course some will undoubtedly use the dreaded “t-word”- but it’s sure as hell going to be fun!

We had an engagement party a year before our wedding in the private room of an upscale Italian restaurant. We invited our immediate family (which is pretty big since both of our parents are divorced and remarried/have had more children with new spouses), and our bridal party and their significant others when applicable. It ended up being about 30 people which was about as big as we could go for a sit down dinner. There was a passed hors d’oeuvre service as guests were arriving and then we had a three course sit down meal, family style. Planning involved picking the menu, ordering flowers, and designing invitations/menus/place cards, so it was like planning a mini wedding reception.
