sophx8 :  Most couples have people in their lives who have supported and encouraged them or somehow contributed to the development of that relationship; it could be the person who introduced them, people who happily listened to the couple’s stories, etc. Contrary to some views expressed in this site, I think a couple is not “an island”; couples exist within a context that includes much more than themselves. That’s why I think it would be a good idea to take your engagement party as an opportunity to acknowledge and honor the people who have been instrumental in your growth as a couple, and have shared your happiness as they have witnessed its progression.

We’re having an engagement party in August at our favorite Italian restaurant.  They have a beautiful banquet room. We’re inviting our immediate families and several friends.  We’re serving a buffet dinner and bar. About 40 people.  This is going to be our only party.  We’re going to be eloping to Hawaii to get married and have a honeymoon just the two of us.  We think it’ll be about $1K for the party.  Our families understand and are very happy for us.
