I prefer your wording.  The And and what follows just doesn’t seem necessary.

Etiquette snob here…

You are on the right track.

A bit late for an Engagement Party per se… but anytime at about the year out mark is still ok for making a Wedding Timing Announcement … or what we used to in the old days call an Engagement Announcement which was printed in the local newspaper.

(In today’s world… a great excuse for a party)

That said,

I prefer your Mom’s wording… because it lets the person know you are celebrating the Engagement and setting the date (celebration truly to annouce the Wedding Date)

My preferred wording therefore would be

” ___ & ___ are engaged!  They have set the date, please join us to celebrate with them

Saturday, June the 10th, 2013

4 pm in the afternoon

Drinks & BBQ

Home of Mr & Mrs ___

123 Bliss Road,

Love Town, USA

A perfect combo of semi-formal & casual (in the style & wording).

The wording also implies the important fact that you & your Fiance are the Honoured Guests… and not throwing the Party yourselves… which is not appropriate (seen as self-promoting / gift grabby etc)

Such a party is usually hosted by the Bride’s Parents at home (but can be anywhere that works).

RSVP can be a phone number, or email address.

And at the Party either you guys or your Dad can announce the date… usually done formally

There should be at least one point in the party when there is a formal moment… when at the very least your Dad would propose a toast to you guys as a couple.

If there are Guests coming from your side of the family (or neighbours and such) that your Fiance doesn’t know / they don’t know him… then it is your Mom’s role to do the intros.

The E-Party is a time when your Parent’s should begin to shine… just as you’ll enjoy the Engagement period and Wedding… so should they also be allowed their milestone moments as well.

Hope this helps,
