So while I’m not officially engaged, we have set a date in Feb 2011. We are going to have a small ceremony in the Bahamas as part of an annual family vacation. We’ll be making a stop there on a cruise so it will be very informal and very simple. We then plan to come back to NY and have a formal reception in April. Heres where my dilemma comes in…
We can do an engagement shoot this Feb in the Bahamas because we happen to also be taking a Disney cruise that stops in Nassau. We already have a meeting scheduled with the company that is organizing the ceremony for us so we could easily just do an engagement shoot right after. It would be the same photographer who would shoot the wedding and he charges $225 for 1 hour plus a dvd of all the images. I like this because otherwise we’d only meet him at the actual ceremony where we get an hour of photography. With an engagement shoot we can do some really fun pics on the beach and not worry about getting too dirty. My only problem is what if this puts extra pressure on my BF to propose by then, although he already considers Feb a deadline so I have a year to plan. Would it be weird to have an engagment shoot without a ring? Would that just be a vacation shoot lol.
Our other option is to do an engagement shoot in NYC with our reception photographer who will charge $100. We can do this at any time. For some reason this doesn’t feel as special to me, maybe because we’re always in the city.
My BF doesn’t really care either way or even if we did an engagement shoot at all. While its not a huge necessity for me, I like the idea of getting a chance to practice in front of a camera. I’m really awkward and never take good pics. What does the hive think?

Will you have enough time to take the pictures when you are there? You don’t want to be rushed when you are meeting with the location people and everything. I’m sure that you will get pictures in that area after the wedding too so maybe you want to do the engagement pictures in NY. That way you will have good pictures from both locations.

If BF doesn’t care either way, I would go with your gut which seems to be telling you the Bahamas. Nobody is going to be looking at your ring finger in the photos– they are going to be looking at you and BF being so happy together!

I enjoyed taking e-pics, so if you get the chance, you should do it! And it seems you wan tot do it in the Bahamas. Even though it will be a little more, if you can afford it, you should do it there!

Why can’t you just do a meet and greet with the photographer and take some simple pictures and not call them engagement pictures? I know a lot of couples that do this for vacations (hello, formal pictures on cruises!) christmas cards, etc. I don’t think it wierd for you and your SO to have a photo shoot.
Then, once you have a ring, you can use a nice picture from that collection as an engagement picture. I know a lot of people that don’t do special “engagement pictures” but just use a really nice picture they already have of them together.
I think it would benefit you to have an hour with the photographer you want to use anyways.

We’ll have plenty of time while we’re there. Our meeting is at noon and we don’t leave port until 7. The meeting isn’t even really necessary, we’re just doing it because we happen to be stopping there and it gives us a chance to see the actual ceremony location. I’m thinking we’ll probably be more rushed the day of the ceremony with so many other people to get pics of.

It the end you should get them done where your gut is telling you to get them done! I just though getting them in NY would be so romantic and because you will have pictures from the wedding in the bahamas this way you have a totally different setting!

lol I can see why it looks like I really want to do them in the Bahamas. I’m in love with Mrs. Sea Breeze’s Trash the Dress shoot and would LOVE to have pics like that.
Destination Wedding in the DR: Trash the DWess
maybe if someone posts really awesome NYC engagment/trash the dress photos i’ll change my mind. I just love the idea of rolling the round in the sand and ocean in formal wear, maybe I’ve been watching too much Tyra lol.
@caszos – i love that idea!

I love trash the dress photos…………… especially when all the bridesmaids are involved.
