My fiancé and I already booked our wedding photographer, but decided to opt out of booking the engagement shoot with her because she wanted $800 for 1 hour, which was the discounted price with signing a contract for our wedding day. So now we are trying to find another photographer to take our engagement session. We found two that we really liked: one who is reasonably priced $180 for 1 hour who does pretty decent pictures and another who does 1 hour for $250 and clearly uses very nice equipment/cameras bc of the quality of her pictures…how important are the engagement pictures? Should I go for the more expensive? Also, is it disrespectful to my wedding photographer to be going to another photographer for our engagement session?

No, I think you can go with another photographer and it’s not rude. You can be honest and say that $800 isn’t in the budget or you don’t have to tell her at all. However, based on personal experience, I think getting photos done with your main wedding photographer is truly a very good idea because that’s when you figure out if you really connect with the photographer and if she really gets you as a couple and will produce beautiful products. Given what I’ve read here and based on personal experience as well, I’ve learned that wedding photographers do not always show everything in their portfolio and rather, focus on the best (to get new clients!) so what you see online may not be truly indicative of everything. At least if you do the epix with her, you will see the full range of her skills and see if her personality meshes with yours and Fiance. Have you tried negotiating with her and telling her all this? What’s the max you can afford?

We have discussed this and that’s as far as she could go down. She is a very talented photographer, which is why my fiancé and I decided on booking her for our wedding day since our wedding photos are very important to us. However, our engagement session is not that important, since we probably won’t look back on them in 20 years. We would like to stay under 250 since this is not a big part of our budget
