I didn’t have engagement photos, but I did my own make-up for my wedding. I also don’t own foundation and hardly ever wear make-up. I went to Sephora for my free trial (you have to spend $50). I went with a tinted moisturizer (not foundation). The foundation would have been too much for me. I want to see my freckles, and I wanted it to feel light. They found the right color for me. I also bought green-tinted primer (I have a reddish complexion).

After getting all my make-up, I watched YouTube videos on “natural” looking make-up and wedding make-up. I then practiced a lot!! I’d show my DH and took photographs of myself with the make-up. I think I ended up doing pretty well for the wedding. It was good because then I also learned some make-up techniques that I used for going out during the honeymoon.

I also went to the MAC counter at Nordstrom. I called ahead in the morning and set an appointment for that afternoon – it looked great and was super easy! Plus, I ended up buying the lipstick because I loved the color so much.

I think $45 is totally worth it! I’m paying $250 to get it done…

By the time you try/buy all the cosmetics you need, you’ll probably have hit $45.  If ever there was a time to pay for makeup, engagement/wedding photos are it.  I know it sucks to splurge, but it will be worth it.

If you would still rather do your own, Sephora has an amazing return/exchange policy.  If you are going to be guessing with colors, etc.

A lot of my brides will do a hair/makeup trial the day of our engagement session, so that their hair and makeup has been professionally done. If you are someone who doesn’t do makeup, to the point you don’t even own foundation, I’d suggest just sucking it up and paying the $45 to have it done.

I agree with the PP that Sephora would be a great idea if you don’t want to spend any money. I did my wedding makeup trial the morning of my engagement shoot so I did pay for it, but wasn’t “wasting” the makeup and I got to see if it would hold up all day.

I had mine done at Ulta. I am SO glad I did. I figured these are pictures I will always look at on. Why not do it right?

I got mine done professionally as a trial for the actual wedding hair/makeup. It wasn’t included in wedding pricing or anything, but I wanted to be certain before going with someone. Well, I’m glad I did it that way. She was a bit over priced, and although the makeup and hair were really pretty, they weren’t anywhere near special. I could do my better hair than her, and the makeup was only slightly better than what I would do myself (mostly because she used more products). The fact that the trial wasn’t anything special, and then she quoted me $300 in travel fees for my venue which was a 45 minute drive for her made it easy to pick someone else…aaaand the girl that did my makeup for my actual wedding was soooo much better. I also trialed the the lady I actually used, and had her do my bridal shower makeup.
