If you had to choose between the two, which would you get done?
My husband and I had a fairly short engagement, and we just ran out of time to get our engagement photos, that were included in our photography package, taken before the wedding. Our photographer was cool with doing the session post wedding. I’ve seen some really awesome wedding dress photos, so I’m thinking it might be fun to do that instead (without actually “trashing” the dress!). Both may be an option, but I’m not sure how that would work logistically.

To me, personally, engagement photos are great but they are just normal pictures of you and your fiance. TTD photos are different and fun, something you might not always get!

Now that it’s after the wedding I would do trash the dress. The only reason we did engagement pics was to get comfortable in front of the camera and to get to know our photographer a little.

We had formal engagement portraits taken in a studio, because, when I was engaged, I didn’t know about the type of photojournalistic e-pics that I’ve subsquently seen on WB of couples in fun locations outdoors. I also did not do a TTD shoot. However, I really would still love to have some pics taken of DH and me in the style of e-pics but, of course, they would not actually be e-pics for us at this stage of our lives. So, I voted for e-pics. 🙂

Engagement pictures! I loved ours and had a great time, and it’s nice to have some non-wedding pictures of you and your SO.

Engagement pictures. You will have plenty of pics of you in your wedding dress from the actual wedding. I think having some professional pictures of you two in your “regular clothes” in an engagement session is really nice.
You could always do an anniversary session for your 1-year anniversary! Those are really cute, I’m seen some super cute ones on Green Wedding Shoes blog.

Why don’t you do half & half?
Most of my couples opt for a “day after” session instead of TTD. It’s a time for more B&G pictures in different/unique locations without fully trashing. Usually they’re sitting in the sand or the hem gets wet but they don’t get in. You could do half in your wedding clothes and then have a quick change.
One of the reason I think engagement photos are important, is that for most people they’re the only profesionally taken non-wedding photos you’ll have. Most people don’t do it again until they have kids. One day your kids are going to want to look back at albums and see mom and dad and how they “used to be”. 😉

Unless you get couples portraits/photoshoots done often, I would get engagement photos. And of course if you can do both, do both 😉
