We weren’t planning on getting them done & we didn’t use any for our save the dates but the photographer we booked includes them in the package we chose. We will get them done prior to the wedding as a practice run for the big day!

We had a professional photographer at our actual proposal so we have lovely pictures from that moment. When the time comes to book a wedding photographer I might try to negotiate a lower package price without an engagement shoot. But we might also take more pictures. Why not?

I looooove our engagement pictures! However, we splurged on wedding photography and our wedding photo package includes and engagement shoot.
It was amazing because we got to know the photographers before the big day so our pictures were a lot easier to take because we felt natural around them and we already knew what to expect.

I think they’re useful as a dry-run for your wedding photos.. to get comfortable with your photographer and for your photogropher to get an idea as to how you photograph, how much direction you want/need, etc.

I did them because when I booked our package for the wedding the photographer had a special that included them for free. It was worth it for us as it got us more comfortable posing or getting good shots together. Also didn’t use for save the dates but did use for our guest book.

i know your wedding photographer lives in another state butthey would be the best person to take your engagement photos so you would know how the relationship would work and whether he would be a good fit.

Initially we didn’t have any nice shots of our engagements ceremony. So our family members insisted on us having food memories. We delayed that like 6 months, but still 2 weeks ago we hired a professional and wore the same outfits. It was so lovely to remember our special day even after such a long while, I definitely recommend it. There’s 100 pics and his mom’s paying for that, so I don’t know how much it costed.

absolutely worth it on a budget. I got our outdoor photoshoot off Groupon because we only needed 2-3 shots to frame and make save the dates, it only cost 80 and worked for us.

Not “engagement” photos because we’re already married, but I recently took our own couples photos while we were on vacation this fall in Colorado. DSLR camera & a tripod…. plus a really patient husband who let me pose him. The biggest obstacle was the fact that I’ve gained weight & purposefully composed our photos to disguise some of that.
I just wanted a few to put on our desks at work & for a nice framed one at home. They turned out awesome, btw.

For me, absolutely not, big waste of money. We don’t put up up pictures of ourselves round the house , nor are we big on posed photos generally, so just some we took ourselves was fine by us .

Thank you everyone for your responses! That all gives me a lot to think about. I think we’re going to try to find an affordable option here, and then schedule a different little test run with our photographer up North before the wedding, as a lot of you emphasized how beneficial that was. I really appreciate all the shared wisdom and insight!
