Hi Lovely Bees!!
So the fiancé and I got engaged three years ago, and our wedding won’t be until another two years (we’re still in college). Nevertheless, we were thinking about getting pictures done soon–should we go ahead and do them now or wait until closer to our wedding?

at least a year to 9 months before your wedding….a lot of my clients do it around that time – they ask for thier high res images for save the dates to send out about 9 months prior to the wedding.

We’ve been engaged for awhile too, and our wedding isn’t until next November. We are less concerned about the appropriate time to do the pictures, and more concerned with the season. Since we are getting married on the beach, we want our engagement photos to be in the snow! I think whatever works for you is best 🙂 You don’t need to follow the “rules.”

I don’t think there is a rule when you should do them… just do them whenever you want. 🙂
If we do them, ours will be a month before the wedding (May), and we’ve been engaged since October.

@syledwithakiss: Go ahead and do them now 🙂 Fiance and I have been engaged for over a year, won’t be getting married for another 2 years, but got them done 5 months after we got engaged 🙂 But every couple is different, if you want to wait, nothing wrong with that :

@syledwithakiss: I think there are so many trends in engagement photos that I would be cautious to do them too early… A lot of bees have used their engagement photos for their save-the-dates, or even in their wedding decor. If you do them now, you might feel like you missed out on a really fun trend once you get closer to your wedding. So I would probably wait until 1 year to 9 months before the wedding.
The other thing is, the engagement session is a great time to get to know your photographer. That’s partly why it’s so helpful to do the e-photos the year of your wedding – so you can discuss the nitty-gritty wedding details with your photog. If you do the e-photos to early, circumstances may change – your photographer may leave the business or relocate, or even if nothing changes, it may be hard to keep that relationship with your photographer between now and the wedding itself.
BUT if you want some lovely photos together, or if you can find someone who can do an engagement session on the cheap, then by all means go for it!
