So the photographer I was interested in offers engagement pictures as part of all her packages. We live in a different city (10 hours away) from where we will be getting married and have an 11 month old. Travel is impossible for us before the wedding. I asked if we could substitute for something else on the wedding day. She replied that the e-pics are complementary and cannot substitute for anything else! I’m a little annoyed. I don’t even know if I want to hire her anymore because I don’t really understand that mentality. She is offering that service to other people who are paying the same amount. I was thinking she could have covered us getting ready before the wedding ( not included in the packages). Is It common to offer “complementary” e-pics that you can’t substitute for anything else?

@Carmabelle: Mine won’t. The e-photos are her way of getting to know the couple before the wedding, knowing how people react to the camera etc. Our photog pretty much insists on them and will not credit anything for them. We don’t own the pictures, the shoot is only an hour. If we want to buy those photos from her it’s $500.

I think it really depends on your priorities. Having flexible vendors was important to us, so the lack of flexibility would have been a problem for me. For example, our photography package came with a proof book of all of our wedding photos. We were not really interested in that, so we substituted it with the dvd and personal use rights for our day-after shoot.
Only you will know whether it’s a real problem for you.

@Carmabelle: It’s very common. @MsGinkgo: hit the nail on the head. They’re complimentary because it gives you a chance to get to know eachother and gets people comfortable in front of the camera. If you go to a store and there are complimentary chocolates, you can’t swap it for something on the shelf.. same idea. Some photographers will, but the majority I know won’t.
