It all depends on your preferences & taste! I personally think 2 carat is more than big enough, and I would prefer the H over J. But it all comes down to what you like, what type of ring you want, and what will suit your personal style.

For me it would very much depend on how much color the bigger diamond shows and their over all performance. Just assuming they perform the same I think I’d do with the J colored bigger stone.

It would depend on how well cut they are and what your ring size is for me.  Also, color is a personal preference and doesn’t determine quality.

I had a round J and now I have an oval J. Neither appeared yellow tinted. It really depends on each stone’s specs like polish, symmetry, cut and if it’s GIA certified. I would choose the stone that looks better and has better specs and not by carat size alone.

Could you try wearing each one for a week or so to see what you like/don’t like about each of them?

Re: size, I have a 2 carat solitaire and, if anything, I wish dh had chosen something smaller, but to others, 2 wouldn’t be big enough! Re: color, seeing the diamonds perform in different types of light throughout the day would give you a better sense of how tolerant (or intolerant) you are of extra warmth.

And since they’re heirlooms, my guess is they’re not superideals, so seeing them in person would also help you get a feel for which of the cuts you tend to like better. (All this assumes clarity is more or less the same between them and one doesn’t have some glaring inclusion!)

That J does look warmer than I would expect.  Do you have pictures of the H?

cns22 :  Just saw your pics — if that’s the one you choose, I’d consider getting it recut. You may lose some carat weight, but it’s already a giant stone and an ideal cut would make it seem bigger anyway (and whiter).

I have an I,  so I could go either way as far as color goes. I’d go with whichever looks more appealing to you, which may have nothing to do with color.

cns22 :  Both sound amazing! Personally, I would choose color above carat. So, the H diamond would get my vote. Although, I won’t lie, I still truly admire warm diamonds on others.
