Any thoughts on doing engraving on a ring that already has the designers name engraved in it? Do I just do it small and next to it? Can I have the designers name rubbed out? Mine’s the Neil Lane collection from Kay and I really want to engrave my wedding band…

I just engraved next to it on my ring. I think I heard some where that jewelers aren’t allowed to rub out anything that’s engraved in a ring for identification purposes? But that could just apply to the material weight and seriel number type stuff.

@yellowshoe: yeah, I know they couldn’t rub out the 14kt but I wondered about the Neil Lane (I doubt Kay would be willing to, but maybe someone else would)

my Darling Husband has JVL printed on the inside of his band, we just did the engraving on the opposite side. no one is really going to see it except him and it costs so much to have it removed.

This may sound silly but the Neil Lane faces the ‘wrong’ direction when my rings are on together (they’re shaped so it has to be that way) and I would want the engraving facing me, and I don’t want two different directions of writing!

I wouldn’t worry about the previous engraving, and as others mentioned I’m not sure you actually can remove it (and if you could it might be spendy). I would just engrave what you want in the direction you want. In all honesty, this might seem like a huge deal now, but five years down the road you probably won’t think much about it.

@NurseMarriedToAFarmer: I suppose that’s true. I’m just bothered by having two sets of engraving, having two directions of writing, having little space for what I want to write, and having what I write not centered. That being said, I DEFINITELY want my ring engraved… *sigh* I guess I’ll just have to talk to Kay and see if they have any ideas…

I just had my ring engraved and my band is neil lane. You don’t get to pick the font size or justification. Kay will just pick where and how they do it based on how they always do it. The letters on mine were so tiny I can barely see it (it’s only 6 letters). Also, it will be upsidedown which I didn’t realize until I picked her up. I am so anal about that stuff but I have to suck it up! It’s not like we look at the inside all the time! Another option is you can have a little ruby set on the inside of the band called ‘a piece of my heart’. We got it in ours…you can see it in this thread (last photo).

@MrsElopement: You don’t by any chance have a pic where you can see the engraving, do you?
ETA: Ohhh the rubies are cute! Did Kay do that or did you go elsewhere?

@loving_life: No I don’t but it’s right next to the piece of my heart. It’s getting sized right now otherwise I would try to take a picture! I will say this though…on my FI’s ring they were able to fit something that was 4 lines long. I was really surprised!
ETA yes the rubies are through Kay!
