bigger isnt always better, whenever i see a women with a huge ring, i assume its probably not real. it could be, im just saying its probably not. im more of a simple/classic type. plus a ring of that size, you couldnt sleep with on, very comfortably, anyway. and i never take my jewerly off!

I wouldn’t wear it because it’s too big for me.  I would worry about people robbing me.  It’s just not my style I’m not a flashy person.

I think Kate’s may be total weight. And perhaps sapphires and diamonds have a different center of gravity so a 1ct diamond may look bigger than a 1ct sapphire.

Her ring looks nowhere near the size as the original posters picture.

@Moose1209:an 18 carat diamond and an 18 carat sapphire are not the same thing. at all. they’re not the same size. it’s apples and oranges.

Yikes. Wearing that behemoth would make me fear for my safety (and question my taste…).

@HisIrishPrincess: HAHAH that cracked me up about having a small child walk around underneath her hand.

7 carats is big enough but why the additional halo diamonds and the diamonds on the band? it’s like going overboard multiple times.

That’s a finger being chopped off by a burglar or mugger waiting to happen.

I think part of it is the angle of the original picture which is taken to make it look larger.  Yes a 7.7 carat ring is large… but not HUUUUGE.

I was intrigued because I agree with you that Kate’s ring certainly doesn’t look anywhere near twice the size.  And I don’t know anything about the differences.. so I did some research. The size difference between and sapphire and a diamond isn’t actually that much. A 14x10mm oval ring would be 8 carats in a diamond and 7.25 carats in a sapphire.  So a 18 carat sapphire would be much larger than a 7.7 carat diamond.  Kate must have beautifully long fingers : )

ETA: Darnit.. I had a lovely chart showing the comparisons but the format was screwwwed  up.

I saw that ring too!!  I actually just finished oggling at it.  I think it’s beautiful, and judging from how the lady talks she just adores bling… her mindset seems like it’s on bigger/more is better mode.  I think it’s a lovely ring and since it seems like she’s rolling in dough (chanel watch, I’m guessing she’s all designer or top quality stuff) it probably suits the couple well.  I definitly couldn’t pull it off though.  But if somebody tried to rob me, all I’d have to do is smack them upside the head with it and they’d leave me alone lol.

I don’t have a problem with the size of the stone, necessarily, but I just don’t like that style–I agree with other posters that the halo puts it over the edge and makes it look too chunky/clunky. As a solitaire, it would probably look much more elegant.

I have to say, I have seen women with huge rings (5+ carats) in NYC, and they don’t seem to have any problem walking around, lifting their hands, living their lives without getting mugged, lol. Although chances are they’re not exactly walking around “rough” neighborhoods with their rings 🙂
