I put this together on my coffee table the other night. I think I like it! What do you think? 🙂
(The table used at the venue is larger than this so it won’t be quite so crammed in.)
(The thing on the right in the wrapper (for safe transport) is a glass rectangle that I filled with sand, starfish and seashells. -Aquarium wedding in October…trying to blend the two things together without overkill-)

Honestly? It looks a little busy for my tastes. I think the leaves are what’s throwing it off for me, and the asymmetry of having more cards on one side of the box than the other.

Blending the autumn and aquarium ideas can be a bit tricky. You have a good start, just needs some tweeking.
What if you add a little autumn color to the table by adding a square topper or a runner on the table in the autumn color. This time of year there are great options in those colors in the stores. Even a few square cloth napkins laid out as flat squares under the place cards. I would then use the shells etc as decor in your rectangular vase.
. I think the leaves scattered sort of cheapen the look. If you want the fall leaves how about a small single branch with a few leaves attached poking out of the sand in the rectangular vase. Or maybe a tall vase with some light up branches with a few leaves hot glues on. The tall branch could sit behind the rectangular vase.
I actually like the asymmetrical feel if the wedding is not so formal.

Oh I thought of two more things.
i went to a wedding that had wide ribbon laid in the rows between the place cards. It flowed off the table in the front. It added color with out fuss.
One other thing to remember is once all the place cards are picked up, you would still like the table to look nice sice people will be coming up to write in your guest book, place cards and gifts.
