I just had escort cards.  I don’t really see why you would also need to display a seating chart.

I would really hate to have place cards if I was a guests.  I’d say let them sit at which ever seats they want at the assigned table.

I just did escort cards with the person’s name and the table number on them. I think it’s a little easier/faster to put out cards alphabetically than to have everyone crowded around trying to read a chart.

We are doing assigned tables, and were considering a chalkboard with names listed alphabetically and the table numbers, but I don’t like people crowded around a chart so I think we’ll just do escort cards so they can grab and go find a seat.

I did escort cards. I think either/or is fine. I had multiple rooms, so people needed both the room info and the table info. It would have been hard to do on a seating chart and probably way more confusing, so my cards said

“Mr. and Mrs. X

Upper Mezzanine

Table 12″

I think if you can easily get them to their tables with a seating chart, that may be easiest. Then if their card is already there, that works great.

I’m going to do assigned seating with a list by table number (at least that’s my plan) I have to confirm with my caterer what their preference is as there will be predetermined menu selections.

@inky_1:  We will have a seating list at the sign in table and place cards at the tables.

I have the seating cards in a card catelogue box (we have a book theme) and since the tables have unique names (and not numbers) I made a map to put on the welcome table as well so people can find their tables easier as well… I think it all depends on what you think is necessary for people to have an easy time finding where you want them.
