who is the person? if you can’t tell the gender, i would just address by his/her first name.

If it’s not someone who is clearly defined as your superior, I think you should be ok to use the first name.  That’s what I would do.  I have found that most people aren’t so formal that they mind being called by their first name.  The CEO of my company insists on using first names in fact.
