I asked a friend to accompany me to a black tie optional wedding, I’m wearing a tux, and was wondering if I should offer her some money to help pay for her outfit. She has only been out of school for a couple years and works at a non profit and therefor doesn’t make a lot of money. I know she needs/wants to purchase an outfit for the event. If yes, how much would be an appropriate amount?

You are a thoughtful and generous person. Another alternative would be to refer her to Rent the Runway and tell her that you will cover the cost.

Yikes! That’s a tough question. I’ve bought many black tie dresses and they usually run $150+. Something that might be an option for her is to borrow one from a friend? A friend recently borrowed mine, so that’s why I thought of it.
I’m not sure you should give her money for a dress. Especially since you’re friend, not a boyfriend.

that’s pretty generous of you. I don’t think she would expect you to purchase her dress.

it’s black tie optional so a cocktail dress will do. I’d be shocked if she didn’t already have one. While I’m sure she’d appreciate the offer, I don’t think it’s necessary at all. I’ve been to many weddings with friends and never expected them to pay for my outfit – I do expect for them to pay for the gift and the hotel though.
