- Wedding: December 2015
So, I was going to do an Etsy wedding. To have unique handmade items, and this way, living in a small European country without many options, you get to have an unique look!
do’s and don’t’s
– Read reviews! very important: before ordering.
– check shipping rates (item may be cheap, but what about the shipping?)
– be sure to order in time. Shipping may be slow.
– be polite. You deal with the seller, they are proud of their items (mostly)
– check the return policy of the shop
– check the number of sales and compare to the number of reviews; this might be a tricky thing, I will explain!
– have unreal expectations (veils for 5 bucks can not beat 500 buck veils)
– rely on that one item to be fab (if the item sucks, be sure to have time to buy another)
Now. Let’s talk shops. There are many on Etsy. Some have very cheap items, some are in between, some are expensive. I can’t imagine buying a very expensive item on Etsy, without seeing it, feeling it…. But it is an option. You’ll get an one of a kind item. You can narrow your search down to category (the category “weddings” was my target) and within that category you have different ones: clothes, accesories, shrugs, etc. I bought my shoes, jewellery, Maid/Matron of Honor outfit, dress(es) and shrugs on Etsy.
Let’s start with the worst experience:
I chose this company to make a winter jacket out of satin and lace plus beading, for those cold moments outside, and even in the church. Based on their review score I thought to have found a reliable company. I had myself professionally measured, and measured myself. Both times same numbers. I sent in clear photographs of the sweaterjacket I wanted (I have it in red, but needed it in ivory) so that was clear. Communication was very good. No major changes or requests from my side. They calculated a price of 89 dollars plus shipping: 119 dollars total. Not cheap. But as I was going to wear the jacket for most of the day, I was happy to pay it. It took about 5 weeks to come in. And the result…….very underwhealming….. Even though I gave upper arm and armscye measurements and added an inch to the already loosely measured number, the sleeves would not fit my arms. At all. Taking a piece in is possible, but taking lace sleeves out…not. Moreover, the neckline is totally dif from my pic. And as we all know, brides. Neckline is sooo important. They made a boatneck, as my pic was a queen anne, that is a great difference. So, when you leave your review at Etsy, and you give 1 or 2 stars, they advice you to contact the shop first. To solve the problem. So I did. Politely: it does not fit. What do you suggest we do? The answer was: “i didn’t want to do your jacket in the first place, as I wrote to you (no she didn’t, she said she was happy to make the jacket), and shipping cost us 50 dollars so we made your jacket without profit (I can’t imagine, shipping on my dress was much less and that was a heavy box), but she would refund my partly if I would send it back, or let me keep it and then I would get a small percentage. Not worth considering. I was willing to take the loss, and keep the item (maybe another bride around here would be happy with it one with smaller arms LOL). But the thing that was infuriating was what happened next: SHE CANCELLED THE PURCHASE THROUGH ETSY. This means that your review will not be placed on the website. This is how shops get a 100% succes rating. All bad review purchases are cancelled! Oh my….. Bad Mermaid Bridal. I wanted to warn brides: you might not get what you order with custom orders! But no one can read it now. So hereby: beware!
A dress needs a shrug. So I went looking. The first shrug I purchased here did not match my dress. But my fitting was way after the return time of the shrug, as I put that in my (5 star) review, the seller contacted me, and offered to send another that would match. She was very friendly and acoomodating. My Maid/Matron of Honor loved my new shrug, so we ordered it for her aswell. Recommended.
Earrings are very important. They finish the look. I wanted Swarovski’s, as I love them. What I got was…not swarovski’s. I guess. I’m not sure. This Korean company (free shipping) sent me pretty earrings, but swarovski’s sparkle more. They just do. The earrings are as described, but I do not believe they are chrystals. I ordered another pair of earrings from another company. For the price; you can’t beat that. But expect smaller earrings and less sparkle.
As my other earrings were not so sparkly, I ordered from the Bridal Closet another pair. Now, these sparkle! With a capital S! Exactly as described. More expensive than the other earrings, but they are very very pretty. I think I’ll be wearing these… Recommended!
I did not want just a necklace, but one I could wear more often. Real silver. I found a wonderful paw print necklace. I fell in love. The seller sent it to my immediately, and I was so happy with it. It is exactly as shown. Time will tell if it is sturdy enough. Recommend!
As I am very spiritual, I wanted a special item for my fiancee. I found this wonderful crotchet / lace applique hand dyed shop, and put together a wonderful applique for my dress, for my fiancee. It is a symbol. The seller was wonderful to work with, and made it exactly as I wanted it. So, not exactly a bridal shop, but still. Recommended!
Swarovski’s all the way! I found this bracelet and the price was good. Item is slightly different from the pic, but maybe it is the pic itself. I am not dissatisfied with this bracelet.
It goes to show that some items are not meant for buying online: shoes are maybe a good example. Expecially custom made shoes. They are wonderful, but they are way too small. As they are custom you can’t really exchange them. I sold them locally. Not for the same price though. This is up to you. Do you take the chance….
Sooo. In my culture the rehearsal is a big thing. So I ordered a dress for it. It came in and it is AWFUL! Loose threads, and the bodice is constructed so that my boobs are at my bellybutton, and the waist of the dress hangs at my hips. Really bad work. It is not my measurements; sent the exact same to jeca and ada and they fit to a tee. it just came in and my rehearsal dinner is in 10 days. I just contacted the seller for a solution. Oh my….. There are some bad reviews for them, but mostly good ones. too bad for me. Do NOT buy here bees!
Save the best for last? I think so! They made my reception dress. The store carries only their own designs. Communication was absolutely wonderful. I provided my measurements and the dress came in fitting like a wellmade glove. The beadwork is extremely good, the embroidery and the quality is superb. I LOVE it. After ordering my ceremony dress from Adasbridal, which was ruined by alterations, I contacted Jeca if they could do a simple ceremony dress, just 4 weeks before my wedding. It HAD to fit. No time for alterations. They made and shipped it in 10 (!!!) days. It came in, fitting like a glove, just like the other one. It cost me 250 bucks, rust fee included, and it is soooo pretty. They are lifesavers. This dress is prettier than my first ceremony dress from adasbridal, so I actually am quite pleased. Pics will be posted after my wedding.
I ordered some other stuff, but most of it is not in yet. These were the highlights. Hopefully I helped you with this advice!
Oh yeah, total cost of 3 dresses, jewelry, and everything: around 950 dollars. yeah. Unfortunately, 200 dollars of the money is spent on items I can’t wear. I got some of it back selling the shoes, and am still trying to sell the jacket. Still. Pretty good! Most brides spend more on a dress alone.
