- Wedding: March 2013
my budget is pretty sorted…but i added a chunk of cash for things i forgot or general emergencies. well today, a chunk of that is gone.
I live in mexico (where my wedding is) but 3/4 bridesmaids are in london (hometown). So i last time i went back to see my family, i went to look at the bridesmaids dresses with them (giving the measurements of the 4th bridesmaid who lives near me in mexico).
So the dessy dresses arrived after i left, and my mum made arrangements to send it to me by DHL along with the ties for the groomsmen. She also added some stocking filler type things – pencils, sharpener, socks. Total package value was about 500 dollars (ties – 28 dollars each, dress 320 dollars etc as dessy products more expensive in england)
First – customs destroyed the pencils. who knew you couldnt send pencils to mexico! it wasnt on the list of prohibited items that were on the DHL list. but you know, whatever, at the end of the day theyre pencils so i got over it
Then – Surprise! tax bill of 350 dollars!!! Plus special DHL bills for service etc. god bees. we researched it to the best of our ability, and we know that mexico does tax high value goods but didnt find anything to suggest itd be that high. and fi and i cant work out how they calculated it – since they said fabric goods are charged at 30% of value and the money paid is way over that.
i mean i have to pay it obviously, or they wouldn’t give me the package (which should be arriving today) but i just stared at the figure in disbelief!! so much money for a 1.5kg package with very few items in ti
vent over. At least I put some money aside for surprises and don’t have to start cutting things from the wedding. but the tax is nearly the value of the package!!
