How have other bees broken into event planning? I realize it is not very lucrative but I think wedding/party planning would be perfect for me. I will have a BS in psychology and I have taken 4 hospitality management courses so I have a bit of a background in it. I will be in the DC area so if anyone knows of places hiring there I would love to know. If not, I would just like to know how people get a start in this field.

My degree is actually in Event Planning (and Tourism) and I work in the DC/MD area as a large-scale event planner for a county government. Basically intern as much as you can and look into certification programs. Hospitality management is very different from event planning so unless you get some actual schooling in the event planning field then your going to have to strictly go off of professional experience.
Schooling builds such a great background in this field, but hands on experience means the most.

@cbj9: i could name a dozen event planners in our area. you could work with a planner as an asst, a restaurant, a hotel, reagan building or convention center, a non-profit etc. look at GWU, I am pretty sure they have a certification program, i think my cousin took it and she works in reston now.
