My fiance and I are getting married at the end of June. We have been together for 6 years and are ready to start trying to conceive right after the wedding, so late July probably.
I know some people may think this is super-silly but I really, really, really want a girl first. Obviously, the one most-important thing is that the baby is healthy, but I really want a girl.
My fiance’s family is all boys. He has 3 brothers and 1 sister. One of his brothers has 2 boys and another one of his brothers just had a boy. The family always jokes around and says that the family is cursed with all boys and there will never be girls. This KILLS me because my family is the opposite and we have basically all girls. I’ve always dreamed of having a little girl.
I just want a girl first so I know that I will at least have ONE. Is there anything that can be done to help the odds of conceiving a girl?

Unfortunately nothing can be done to choose the sex of your child. Aside from all those old wives tales about doing ridiculous things to try for a girl/boy, there is absolutely nothing that you or your husband can do to try and make the baby a girl.
The only way would probably be for a fertility specialist to take a sperm with an “X” chromosome and combine it with your egg, but I don’t even know if this is possible or allowed yet! Better off for wishful thinking and just let God do his work.
Good luck! I hope you get a girl!

Nothing can be done about it.
I am the first of 3 girls. Husband has one brother and one half-sister, boys dominate his side of the family.
I am having a girl.

There are a bunch of old wives’ tales, but it’s all bogus. Just have sex and hope statistics are on your side (more girls are born than boys after all).

No, but the fact that he has lots of boys in his family has nothing to do with whether you’ll have a boy or a girl. Your chances are basically 50/50 every time.

There are a bunch of old wives tales like the other PP’s have mentioned. You can always try them for fun (it never hurts right) but there is one thing that is true about one old wives tale. If you elevate your bottom after sex it helps the sperm get to the egg quicker. Male sperm are fast and have short lives whereas female sperm are slow but live longer. Elevating yourself can help the female sperm get to egg quicker since it can take days for sperm to break through the lining of the egg the female sperm has better chance this way. The rest is determined from your man . . . if he has mainly all male sperm going in then the chances are higher that it will be a boy.
Like I said, it never hurts to try all those old wives tales . . . I did when I tried for my daughter and I got a girl but then again it could all be coincidence. I am TTC around April next year and I also want a girl. I will keep my fingers crossed for both of us! Good luck!

There’s some evidence that female sperm live longer than male sperm inside your body. So, if you knew exactly what day of your cycle you ovulate and had sex 5 days before there would in theory be more x sperm still alive than y sperm At that point. But again, so many tricky factors :). Good luck!

There’s always the how i met your mother conception myth — the heat and lemons for girl, cold water and pickled herring for a boy 😉

Dunno if it works but if you want to give it a go there are folks who try to ‘gender sway’ based upon what foods you eat, when in the cycle you have sex, supplements you take, etc.
Taking Charge of Your Fertility has a chapter on it (with the proviso that it might not work).

I have no thoughts on whether this legitimately “works” or not, but people use the Shettles Method for this. The theory is that “male” sperm (Y chromosome carriers) swim faster and die quicker in the woman’s body and “female” sperm (X chromosome carriers) swim slower but are stronger and stay alive longer. So, if you BD in your fertile window but further from O (like a couple days before) and you get pg, that’s supposed to be a girl. If you BD and get pg on O day, then that’s supposed to be a boy.
ETA: Clarified the sperm description.

Sperm aren’t “male” or “female” they are merely X and Y… and gender is not biological, sex is. It is purely chance… unless you are going through IVF and can have a chromosomal test done.

You probably don’t want to hear this, but I think you shouldn’t get your hopes too high for one gender or another. My sister has all boys, and I’m sure she would have liked a girl. But she loves her boys soooooo much and is very happy. You don’t want to get into a position where you’re happier with a girl than a boy (or vice versa).

Some people believe that sperm with the X chromosome (female) are slower, so that you would have better luck conceiving a girl if you BD a few days before ovulation.
There’s also this Chinese Sex Predictor chart:
Obviously, you should take any advice with a grain of salt since there are plenty of people who could say these didn’t work for them.

Yeah, we tried all those “wives tales” things and none of them worked.
Your chances of having a girl are only slightly statistically higher for having a girl (something like 52% to 48%) no matter which method you use.
My state does not allow you to choose sex for IVF. They won’t even tell you what the embryos sex are.
