First, let me say this is not a thread about whether gifts are expected or not, what defines a good gift, or anything like that. I’m totally grateful for any gift I do get, and am NOT judging my guests based on what they do or do not purchase…
That said, I’ve been doing a little registry stalking, and I’ve been noticing some strange things. Now, everything we put on the registry is stuff we actually want, so it’s not like these items are fluff or anything, but a couple things have been purchased that totally confuse me. Only 5 of our items have been purchased off one one list, but one of those was the trash can for the bathroom. Not the whole bathroom set, just the trash can. On the other list, only about 6 or 7 things have been purchased, but someone bought us the doormat. There’s tons of other stuff still available on the registries that is the same price as both of those items, so I’m wondering what made these guests say “Sweet, the bathroom trash can is still available! That’s what I’m getting them!” lol.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled to get both of these items. We want them and I was sort of worried that no one would want to buy stuff like that and we would only end up with dishes and linens. But I never thought those would be some of the first things to go! I find it more funny and bemusing than anything else…
Anyone else have some random gift experiences like this?

Haha, maybe they understood that a lot of people wouldn’t buy the trash can so they decided to get it for you? I would never buy something boring like that! I want to buy cute/fun stuff.

@MrsSaltWaterTaffy: yeah, me too! I wonder if you’re on to something. Maybe this mystery person just really wanted a nice, cohesive bathroom, but they never got the trashcan they wanted. Now every day they are forced to use an inferior trashcan that clashes with their bathmats. They probably wanted to save us a lifetime of bathroom decor heart ache 😉

Maybe they are going to purchase a bunch of stuff to put in the trash can, like cleaning supplies and for the welcome mat, maybe they are going to put that in a welcome basket with a bunch of other stuff.

that’s so funny… you have to remember though, some people take a gift from your registry, and group it with a gift they’ve picked out on their own. maybe the person who got you the doormat is also getting you gardening things, or a home depot gift card. who knows what’s up with the person who picked up the trash can, though! 🙂

Honestly when I see that stuff on a registry, I usually by a gift card so the couple can get it bc its a pain to wrap! Hope thats ok? 🙂 Honestly they strangest gift I’ve ever seen, well actually never saw it but heard about it and wanted to punch my husbands friends was for his cousins wedding, his friends bought the lucky couple a sex swing as a joke. Glad they were not forced to open gifts in front of guests! They did it as a joke but the bride was mortified and upset when she found out. She thought it was a slap in the face and I agree. I get a good joke but save that for the bachelor party or whatever. A little inappropriate I think, but his friends are not exactly all there you could say. 🙂

@MissGreen: That is why I pay BB&B to wrap the gifts for me!

Hilarious! I also like to get fun stuff and get disappointed if all the good stuff is gone!

I always try to buy the most mundane thing off the registry. I figure, they’ve registered for this item for a reason. I know most people like to buy the “fun” stuff, but I go for the most random thing and buy it. When one of my BMs got married last year, I bought the humidifier off of their registry, and she was thrilled … no more static shock in their bedroom!

@MissGreen: OMG! I was on Craigslist a few weeks ago and saw a sex swing for sale. The message indicated that it was received as a wedding gift. It came up on a search for wedding items. I wonder if its the same people?? I’d hate to think there are more of them out there…LOL! Horrifying!!!

It cracks me up when people go off the registry. I mean, I’d be psyched with any gift, but it’s hilarious what people come up with! We have some friends who got a piece of cheddar cheese shaped like Brett Favre as their wedding gift. It was from family in Wisconsin, but still.
