My engagement ring is sort of a family heirloom (being passed down from one previous generation). It will be sized when we visit the relatives and driven down by my Future Mother-In-Law when she visits after the sizing. Anyway, I bring this up because when we discussed the ring, Fiance and I was cautioned that a previous ring belonging to relative was taken in to be sized and the stones were replaced with stones of lesser quality. So understandably, the family is being cautious to only take it to a trusted jeweler (friend of family). Has anyone heard of such a thing happening?

I haven’t heard of it recently, just because stones now usually have lazer etching, but the stone in my mom’s engagement ring was swapped when she took it to get sized. I agree with your family – take it to someone who you can trust. Also, make sure they map it, and see if they might be able to etch it so that it’s always identified as yours.

My grandmother had a horrible situation happen. She took her ring in to get cleaned and the jeweler took out her IF perfectly cut diamond and replaced it with a lower quality stone. She never got her original stone back. It was HORRIBLE!

I’ve heard of that happening and it’s scary. Try to get your diamond etched so that you know it’s yours. Its sad that some people can be so dishonest.

Omg, I haven’t heard about this but I was always worried when I would get my ring dipped and cleaned… but I realized the first day I got it that I have a small flaw in the diamond (little black dot) so I always know if I get my diamond back… go figure that I would be happy with a flaw!

Thanks for the advice about the laser etching. It is really scary that a professional would do something like that. We will also be getting it appraised and insured beforehand.

I don’t know what laser etching is but a good jeweler will put down any inclusions, etc…on a piece of paper (of a diamond drawing) so you know that the diamond is yours.

@CapeBoundBride: I have heard WORSE then replacing it with a lower quality diamond!! My Mother-In-Law sent her ring in for cleaning and they replaced it with a ZERCONIA!!!!!! argghhhh so awful!! 🙁

I’ve heard of that. I always ask to look at my ring under the ‘scope everytime when I pick it up from the jeweler. They look at me like I’m crazy, but I don’t care. I don’t trust those 20 year olds working at Jared’s. I check to see that the laser etching on the diamond in my ring is still there. It’s always there still. At least in the main diamond. They could swap out the other side diamonds and I wouldn’t know. I hope they don’t do that!

I’ve heard of it, Fiance and I want to get my stone etched. I’ve only had to take it in once to get the prongs tightened, and I had it done while I waited.
Fiance was super-nervous, so now that I’ve gotten the prongs tightened, I’m going to look to see where I can get the GIA number etched.

I’ve heard of this, too, and it makes me nervous. My ring is a family ring as well, and I’m seriously considering getting it etched just for the peace of mind.
