@JackiBean:  Is it possible the parents could all go visit you in Honolulu to meet?  We had a similar situation and had our parents come to us when they met for the first time.  And who doesn’t want a reason to go to HI??? 🙂

As for planning, we planned an east coast wedding from the west coast, and learned that the internet makes it ALL possible!  The venue / food is the hardest part to do virtually, and you’ve already done that, so that’s great!  We arrived in town a full week before the wedding and really needed that week to wrap up all of the details.. I didn’t think we’d be so busy but we didn’t have a moment to relax.

I had a bridal shower / bachelorette party weekend (shower in the AM and bacholerette the same evening) with my family and friends where I am from about a month before the wedding… it was intimate and lovely.  If you did something like that it could also be an opportunity for the parents to meet, if his parents are willing to travel to Chicago.

I’m living in NYC and most of my (large) family is in Maine. First, we planned a Maine wedding but there were so many issues, tyring to find vendors etc, we had to keep changing the plan until we threw in the towel and started planning a much smaller NY wedding.

We didn’t do any of the traditional things — shower, dinner, etc, because we’re an older couple and have both been married before. However, we are going to Maine in August and will have an informal party on the lake where we can have an unlimited number of guests, and everyone can get to know each other.
