I haven’t stayed there–but I did stay in Cancun last September (at Live Aqua).

Tips:

-Bring lots of sunscreen.  They charge an arm and a leg there for sunscreen!

-Don’t wear your sunglasses into the ocean.  The waves knocked my Dolce & Gabannas right off my face and I never saw them again. 🙁 The currents are crazy in the fall.

-Tip staff, especially the staff you think you’ll interact with a lot.  We tipped the bartenders like crazy and they loved us.  A little too much–they kept egging me on when I was really drunk to drink more… I ended up puking so much that night.  But they did it thinking they were being friendly, so I’m not upset with them, lol.  I was much more firm the next night when I reached my limit.

-At the airport: you’ll be looking for the airport shuttle you’ve booked… if a guy runs up to you, don’t assume that’s him.  For us, some guy ran up to us, asking us which company we were with.  We told him and he was like “oh yeah totally I work with them follow me!” and he took us to them, and then expected a tip for the 3 meter walk.  We would have found it, we should have just ignored him.  It’s a 2 dollar issue, but it just was a yuck way to start the vacation. (He did NOT work for them.. he brought us to the driver who did work for the company we were with, who we happily tipped.)

-Unless you’re absolutely sure you want to book at the Excellence Riviera, consider hotwire.com.  We used it to book Live Aqua and paid under 300/night for the two of us, versus 400+ if we’d booked directly.

AmySomeday:  My Fiance and I stayed at Excellence Riviera Cancun last year in December. It was awesome. The food was great, their restaurants were good as were the buffets. We usually see corny entertainment at these types of places but Excellence actually had awesome shows, with actual talented performers. There were different shows and things to do nightly. It wasn’t a very “party” atmosphere which we liked, but can be a negative depending on who you speak to.

The one thing I did not like was that at the time we were there the beach was covered in seaweed and other things and it was basically unusable – I’m not sure how it is now. But their pools were out of this world. They have a lazy river that runs all throughout the resort grounds, it was amazing and I’m not much of a pool person. The spa was fantastic as well, do the spa “circuit” when you’re there, it was really cool.

Even with the beach issue we had a fantastic time and would definitely go again.

Let me know if you have any questions I’d be happy to answer them 🙂

I stayed at Excellence Riviera Maya last year. You will love it! We were there at the end of May, over Memorial Day, and upgraded to oceanview. I was actually really glad that we didn’t upgrade to the Club. The resort was maybe half full so there was always plenty of room at the pools and I don’t think I would have felt that we got our money’s worth. I can’t say what October will be like though.

We took advantage of the activities on the resort and really enjoyed them – yoga, tennis, kayaking, etc. We also went to the shows at night. We wanted to do the bike ride to the local town, but it always was full. Get there extra early if you want to do it.

We booked through Expedia for our flight, room and shuttle. You may want to check prices to see if booking directly through Excellence is the best deal. I’ll send you a message with a blog post I wrote with some additional detail. Have an amazing time!
