Hi Everyone. I wanted to post a quick birth story for all of you mommies-to-bees. If you followed my previous posts, I had a fantstic pregnancy. I felt great pretty much the whole time and loved being pregnany. My labor and delivery was pretty similar. My only birth plan was “get the baby out.” I did not do anything to prepare for labor (EPO, RRLT, Birth Ball, Massage…etc). I had no signs of labor going into Monday morning, so it was quite a shock to me and my DH! Timeline:
5:45 Monday am – woke up after great nights sleep to some miled period cramping. Used the washroom and had very light spotting. Laid down and realized that cramping was coming and going, so I started timing them.
8:45 am – After timing a few hours, they were 4 minutes apart lasting 1 minute each, but they weren’t strong at all. However, since I was GBS+, I called my Dr, who said come get checked out at the hospital
9:10 am – Admitted to triage. They said I was 1 cm dialated and in very early labor, but they were admitting me because contractions were evenly timed and they wanted to start antibiotics
10:30 am – Got settled in my L&D room. Got my first round of penecilian via IV
11:15 am – Came in and broke my water, said I was 2 cm dialated. Expected a long day/night of labor
1:45 pm – Contractions were getting stronger and I was uncomfortable, not umbearable, but I didn’t want to wait to find out what that felt like. Asked for an epidural. I was 3 1/2 cm dialated, and the epidural was very quick and painless. The relief was instant (they also put some fentinal in the first dose, so I was nice and warm and fuzzy with no pain at all). Magical!
4:00 pm – Baby’s heartrate was decelerating with my long, powerful contractions (which I didn’t feel, thank god!) They tried rolling me into different positions and got me on all fours, but it wasn’t helping. They decided to place a fetal monitor on the baby’s head, but when they went to check me, SURPRISE, I was fully diated! Darling Husband said the look on my face was of shock and terror. I wasn’t expecting that at all!
4:00-4:30 – Did some practice pushes. They set up the room and called my OB
4:30 pm – All set and ready to go, while pushing, baby’s heartrate went erratic again. OB decided to use a vacuum. Once the vacuum was attached (only time I can say I was truly in pain. They had to stretch me quite a bit to get it attached correctly), I pushed 4 more times with the vacuum.
5:00 pm – Jackson arrived in this world with a full head of hair and a nice loud cry. Couldn’t believe I actually had a baby! I only have 1 2nd degree tear. All in all, I was extatic!
We got home yesterday and everything is going well. Still trying to figure eachother out, but we’re getting there. I’m mixing breast feeding and formula. If Jackson feels like latching, he gets breastmilk. If not, he gets formula. He seems happy with this situation, so we’ll stick with it!
