I know this sounds ridiculous, but I used to hold in my sneezes. At about 7/8 weeks that started hurting so I’d just let myself sneeze naturally. Now, it is EXCRUCIATING when I sneeze, in my lower abdomin. I’m not sure if it’s pregnancy related but after I sneeze I’m doubled over in pain most of the time for a good minute. It feels like something ruptures! Is anyone experiencing the same thing?

i had some discomfort with sneezing earlier on. It felt just like the round ligament pain I was experiencing though. I never had any excruciating pain with sneezing. If it’s that bad, you might want to call your doctor. It can’t hurt to ask about it.

You shouldn’t be having excruciating pain when you sneeze; although, there is a tendancy for you to bunch up and hold your muscles when you sneeze. Try to relax when you sneeze and put pressure on your stomach by holding your hand very firmly on your stomach when you sneeze. If the pain continues to be as bad as it is, go see your doctor. Although doubtful, it could be a sign of something that needs to be looked. If it is nothing, at least going to the doctor will put your mind at ease.

I had a cold all last week and noticed pain when I sneezed, as well. I even told my husband, “Sometimes I sneeze so hard my uterus hurts!” I also thought it felt like round ligament pain. However, it wasn’t excruciating and it went away as soon as the sneeze was over. I think a call to the doc would be a good idea.

My god, pregnancy is weird. Seriously! I have never heard of so many of the things I’m finding out from the expecting bees (runny nose, sneezing pain, etc.). It’s like your body becomes a science experiment!
@firsttimemom: I agree with PPs – a quick call to the doc for reassurance can’t hurt!

Doesn’t sound ridiculous at all, but does sound painful! Sneezes started to hurt me too, especially in the first trimester. My Dr. explained that it was the round ligament stretching, and explained that it could also be due to the muscles in my abdomen moving to accomadate the growing uterus. It helped a lot when I would brace myself for a sneeze by kind of grabbing my stomach with my hands to support my muscles. There’s a really good chance you have nothing to worry about, but you’ll probably feel better if you call the doc just to be sure. Hope you feel better!

I have had some pain in my side when sneezing or coughing. For me it was round ligament pain. (I didn’t even know what that was until consulting this board!) You might google it and see if it matches how you’re feeling. Hope you feel better!

I had the sneezing pain as well…luckily it only lasted til about the 12 week mark and then stopped. But in the meantime, it really really helps if you kind of bend down towards yours knees when you sneeze. Or if i’m in bed i’ll pull my knees up to my chest. You’ll be painfree this way because it bunches everything up!!
