Do NOT order up sizes. Look at the designer’s size chart and choose based on that. If the dress has a full skirt, don’t worry about the hip too much. Most people are between sizes, buy for the larger of the two, but again, do not order larger.

Look for a local seamstress now and explain the situation – that you might need some alterations within a week done in June. Summer is an extremely busy time for bridal alts, so give them a heads up and they may be kind on their rush pricing.

JBJ2017 : I wouldn’t order up any sizes – they’ll just end up paying more for alterations. My cousin (who’s one of my bridesmaids) lives out of the country and sent me her measurements. Find a place that will help you out. After choosing a style a year out from the wedding, I did some research and called some salons to see how long the designer’s dresses normally take to come in. They told me that they normally take 4-5 months to come in, so we ordered them 7 months out from the wedding so that we would have plenty of cushion time for me to mail her her dress and so she would have time to alter it.

We also chose a style that was tighter around the bust and flowy past the waistline, so that made sizing a lot more forgiving. I still wouldn’t order a size up though. If you are working with a salon, they would be very helpful with letting you know how the dress tends to run size wise. And make sure that they are measured professionally or at least by someone other than themselves!

JBJ2017 :  In that case, you just need to factor in all three measurements when looking at the size chart. Same applies: buy for their biggest measurement, but not bigger. Most people measure their hip too high and thus too small, which is why it is important someone experienced takes their measurements for them.

JBJ2017 :  Can we see the dress you have chosen? I have a bridesmaid from out of country too and others scattered, thats why I went with an inifinity dress. I know they aren’t everyones cup of tea but now I do not have to worry about them gaining or loosing weight because the dress will fit regardless. Bonus is no alterations are needed!

Most of my bridesmaids do not live in the same country as me, or eachother. We didn’t buy dresses from a bridal shop, we ordered them online from ASOS, shipping to them individually. With free returns some of them exchanged their sizes for a better one with no hassle. So now that they have their dresses, they can have them altered wherever they live at their leisure. I would be way too stressed trying to organize and fit in all their alterations very close to the wedding!

Order the dresses to their measurements and then post the dresses to the bridesmaids…. They can try them on and get them altered in the country they live in.

JBJ2017 :  What country do your BMs live in? Are you sure DB haven’t got any stores there? They’re popping up in the UK like nobody’s business lol

Are they not likely to visit you between now and the Wedding?

My BMs all live at least 2 hours away from me so we arranged a weekend they’d all be here to shop.

I’m seeing them all together again at my hen party, so they’re having fittings that weekend.

It’s a challenge — I had to do this for my sister’s wedding, and two days before the wedding, it needed some serious alterations.  Even with giving the store my measurements, it was a game-day call if I’d even be able to fit into the dress… Fortunately, the alterations lady was a lifesaver and fixed it with a few hours to spare.

Most of my BMs were out of town.  I opted for a chain location that each one of them could access relatively easily.  In the end though, they all flew in to try on dresses and have a celebratory weekend together.  It worked out though, because their dresses were shipped to their local stores where the alterations were done.

JBJ2017 :  fair enough! Beautiful dress by the way. But due to its amount of structure, I agree with pp. You should either have them all order their own dresses and ship it to themselves in their country so that they have time for alterations and such. If David’s wont ship to them, ship them to yourselves and then send it to them. Lots of leg work but at least you wont be stressed if their dresses fit or not! Good Luck!

My Maid/Matron of Honor lives/works abroad and was unable to arrive in the country until THREE DAYS before the wedding. She sent me her measurements, but I too was nervous about getting a dress for her. I ended up going with wrap style dresses, so it could be a little big or small and we could still make it work.

This was actually a good thing because one other Bridesmaid or Best Man got pregnant after we bought the dresses, and was four months along on my wedding day…we just tied her dress a little differently too!

JBJ2017 :  Mine weren’t out of country, but I had two who lived on the west coast, while I’m on the east coast.  What they did was they went to a tailor to take their measurements, and they called them into my local bridal salon I was getting the dresses from.  Once the dresses were in we mailed them to the bridesmaids who lived far away so they could get them altered where they live instead of running around last minute.
