Experiences trying on a way too small sample size?

I had trouble with the mermaid dresses – Im a UK 10 – 12 but I could NOT get those things over my thighs (I admit I’m a bit curvy but come on!) I found I gravitated more towards sheath or A Line dresses because I could see how they looked on me.  Ask at your salon though, I wasn’t interested enough in the mermaid dresses to bother trying to find a way around it.

I’m around the same size as you — like regular sample sizes fit me pretty well.  I wanted a mermaid dress.  My dress was only available in like the “bridal model sample” size which was tiny.  It was totally open in the back when i tried it on but I still got an idea of what it would look like, I think. Here’s a pic of the way-too-small sample when I tried it on, and then my wedding day (my actual dress was a little too big but that’s another story).

So I was pretty much exactly the same sizes as you when I tried on dresses. The one I specifically went to try on was only temporarily available (being toured around my area as part of a pre-release showing) and only in a size 6. I got stuck half in it. They get you to put the dresses on over your head (so that you don’t dirty/damage it by stepping on it while pulling it up) and I’m quite busty and got stuck with my arms straight up (trying to shimmy it down) with no bra on. I had to get my consultant to help pull it up until it was loose enough to pull the rest of the way myself.

What we ended up doing was this, I put on a different dress that fit me perfectly (corset back ftw!) and we just held the original one in front of it. It wasn’t perfect obviously, but it blended nicely enough with the one I was wearing to get the point across. So if there’s one that you really like that you can’t get on, your best bet is to find one in your size that is as similar as possible structurally. That way you can see how it will fit your body (ie seams in the same places etc) and just hold the other up to see the full look.

The style of dress makes a pretty big difference as to whether I could get it on or not. The gown I ended up getting was a ballgown and I got it on no problem even though the sample was an 8 (I ordered a 14 due to the aformentioned bustyness) because it was a ballgown. The one that I got stuck in was a mermaid (and so was a second one that I almost got stuck in but saw it coming and gave up early). Shapewear helped, not compression but just because it allowed the fabric to just glide on.

I wanted a mermaid, but I had trouble fitting into samples. It sucked. I ended up with a ball gown that I loved. In the end I’m glad I chose a ball gown. But it was frustrating not being able to fit into the samples. I’m a 14. But more like a 20 for bridal mermaids. You are much smaller, and I’m sure their tricks will work for you. But there weren’t enough spanx or clips to get some of those dresses to fit on me! Lol

ElephantAndTheFlea :  I wouldn’t worry. I was so, so, SO much bigger than the sample sizes. The women who helped me would literally have me step into them, not even bother attempting to zip, and would hold it as closed as possible to get the truest indicator of my size. It worked fine enough. I was absolutely able to get a good indication of what the dress would look like on. (That being said, I ended up selling my dress and buying one off of Modcloth, but hey.)

ElephantAndTheFlea :  I’m your size (my gown was a size 10). Everywhere I went the samples were in the 10-12 range – I think only one store they were a size 8, and I was able to squeeze my hips into them. I’d be suprised if they sent a 6 – that seems really small, on average.
