I am obsessed with Teen mom and 16&Pregnant, but I don’t think the shows are “awesome” by any means. I guess it’s kind of like rubbernecking at an accident, you know? It’s terrible and painful to watch but you can’t tear your eyes away. I also watch because sometimes you have girls who really are amazing moms and really do want to do the best they can for their kids. It’s…heartwarming, I guess, to watch that. I don’t think they glorify teen pregnancy either–if you watch these shows, there is no way you end up thinking, “Oh man that looks AWESOME! I want to drop out of high school, struggle for money, find out my boyfriend cheated on me, and fight with my parents all the time TOO!!”.

@Miss Tattoo: Yeah there have been reports of that…I haven’t read any of them though, so I don’t want to comment on it one way or the other, except to say that if a teenager is getting pregnant just to be on the show, she’s got bigger problems that being a teen mom.

I personally don’t like them. While I don’t think that all the girls on the show want just fame and fortune, and some of them do have their babys best interest at heart, I just don’t like to support that industry. I mean, I saw on the covers of magazines that a couple of the girls got boob jobs. How can they afford that? Why do they need that? They were only 20 years old. I just hope they at least put a college fund away for their kids as well.

Saying that shows like this push teens to get pregnant is like saying rap music and video games push teens to plan out school shootings.

I think saying that watching teen moms on tv causes teens to get pregnant is like saying listening to violent music lyrics causes people to commit violence. There’s probably a correllation, but I would be very hesitant to call it a causal relationship.

@tranquility:

Not necessarily. Personally, I can see certain medias being partially responsible for societal behaviors.

I LOVE 16 & Pregnant & Teen mom. I watch it for entertainment and I do feel sorry for the girls. I don’t think I’ve ever watched it and thought “MAN! I wish I could have had a baby at 16.” I think it shows pretty obviously how difficult life is with a baby.

@Miss Tattoo: Yeah, it’s really the love for watching people train wreck their lives and to see others more miserable than *yourself* (by that, I mean the way most people view it).

Scary fact: one of my future step-son’s is a “teen mom”.  She got pregnant in/around her senior year and has a cute baby girl my step-son adores.  The girl is doing okay and is making it on her own, but she’s also a single mom to boot.  (talk about a rough way to start your adult life…).

scary fact 2: a pair of sisters were pregnant when I was in high school.  ONE got pregnant JUST BECAUSE THE SISTER DID!  Another year, another classmate was pregnant and dropped out.  (sophmore year, I think…).  My senior year, I had yet ANOTHER classmate who was pregnant and dropped out because of it.

I, personally, despise those shows because they DO glorify it.  Too many girls are getting pregnant when they could pretty easily get BC (and, honestly, if you’re gonna go out and do the deed, why not just take BC and not have to deal with a baby?).

Of course, it’s also TEACHERS who don’t present being a parent properly.  I worked at a high school as a tech and the “home ech” teacher said she didn’t know what it was like to be a parent, because she wasn’t one.  (said teacher made it sound like a baby wasn’t a chore…. riiiight, staying up all night with a sick baby then having to work the next day isn’t difficult….. uh huh. I wish.)  One of the girls in the class was laughing because she claimed being a parent wouldn’t CHANGE ANYTHING.  She’d still go out partying and take the baby to the movies, etc etc etc.  (I so wanted to strangle that girl and tell them EXACTLY how difficult a baby was….but I kept my mouth shut…).

I’ll shut up now…

Despite the show being about young girls having babies it does show some hardships they endure. Girls attempting to get pregnant just to get on the show, shows a lack of a brain and possibly proper upbringing. No to mention there are tons of kids having babies way before this show started.

the “fame” from this is just like fame from any other entertainment source and Im glad the girls can use it and get paid since they are being used for a show.

But I love these shows as well along the same lines of loving Maury and Steve Wilcos.

@Miss Tattoo: But I don’t see how THE SHOW glorifies teen moms. Maybe tabloids, People mag, US weekly, etc do…but the show definitely does not. If anything, it gives teen moms a platform to be seen by the rest of the world. I would say that it’s society’s obsession with reality stars that is the real problem–people are glorified for a lot worse things that struggling as a teen mom (hello, jersey shore?!).

omg OP, we had a married couple living with us right after the husband got back from Iraq and the wife was OBSSESSED with these shows.  It was torture! luckily we don’t actually have cable tv or w/e so she couldn’t watch them in the living room but she was always on her laptop watching them.  I certainely don’t get it.

I also know a teen girl who heard her best friend was pregnant and went out to get pregnant so they could ‘share the experience’ (they were 16/17) And they were constantly talking about getting on that show- lo and behold that never happened and now they have babies and are extremely irresponsible about it.  It baffled me beyond measure.
