- Wedding: May 2013
I am getting married in May 2013 and decided to start my wedding gown search this past July. My summer work schedule was brutal, so I decided that I would really try to do a lot of upfront research on-line and through magazines before visiting a store in person. Plus, the idea of visiting lots of bridal boutiques/department stores during the Manhattan summer heatwave did not appeal to me in the slightest.
I looked through countless bridal magazines and started to feel a little panicked as I really could not find many dresses that inspired me let alone dresses that I liked. Everything was either too over the top / high fashion or embodied too much of a minimalist approach. I turned my search on-line and looked at web sites for all of the well known high end department stores, boutiques and designers. I also started scouring the forums of Wedding Wire, the Knot and other sites for anything related to finding a wedding dress in NYC. I came across several posts regarding Selia Yang and her beautiful, simple aesthetic. After visiting her web site and viewing her collection, I knew I was extremely lucky and had stumbled upon a very special designer. All of the Selia Yang dresses on-line looked gorgeous – beautiful dresses with stunning fabrications. I also loved that despite being fancy, Selia’s dresses had a relaxed, elegant feel to them. I also checked out her blog to see her dresses in real weddings. This gave me a really good sense of how beautiful they look in real life. After a few months of searching and not being able to even come up with a list of 2-3 dresses, I was ecstatic about finding a bevy of dresses I was interested in – all from the same designer! My friends, my mother, my sisters, my future mother-in-law – all gave the thumbs up after viewing the collection on-line. My mom told me to cancel all of my other future boutique appointments as she was absolutely certain I would end up finding my dress at Selia Yang.
My first appointment was fantastic. Selia Yang dresses are sold in NYC’s Saks Fifth flagship store as well as a few other boutiques, but since I live in Manhattan, I made the appointment at the Selia Yang salon. I went to pre-screen dresses before having my mom fly up from Texas to help me choose a final dress. Selia Yang herself was there and handled my first fitting . I knew my excitement wasn’t overrated when I tried on the first dress she handed me (not even one the dresses from my list), looked in the mirror and immediately had goosebumps. I did not expect to love every single dress I tried on, but that is exactly what happened. I was in heaven – all of her dresses flow so beautifully and showcase exquisite details and workmanship.
For my followup visit, my mother and one of my sisters (who flew in from Chicago) came with me. They absolutely loved the dresses and loved Selia. Selia is such a warm person who really made the experience unforgettable for us. Her salon is also impeccable, very serene, and a true artist/designer’s atelier. I think my mom and sister left completely in awe of Selia – the designer and the person 🙂
I will never forget the look on my mom’s face when I tried on the dresses. She is extremely opinionated, but she had a difficult time narrowing down the dresses – what a happy problem. In the end, Selia helped us make the final decision as she mentioned that she heard me say “I love this dress” three times in regards to a particular dress and not the others. When she told me this, I knew she was right. Selia truly cares about you finding the perfect dress for yourself.
I mirror another reviewer’s comments when I say by far the best dresses and experience.
