Whoa, that’s not a subtle jab kind of ad for sure. I think they’re using Exxon because that’s the company that’s used the “we have a message that we care because…” ads. I am incredibly pissed at the subsidies. Seriously, what are they for?

There are many subsidies to be mad at. Corn anyone? which makes HFCS cheaper than real sugar? Cheaper than natural feed for our meat? which is not part of their natural diet, just to start?

And what is wrong with profits? Its not profits in themselves which are evil, but the how they are earned. So what are they doing that you dont’t approve of?

@ThreeMeers:  What is Exxon doing?  Um, how about destroying the planet?

@lolot:  be specific. I am not saying they are not, but please do not complain or soap box without the supporitng information.

And anyone who drives a gas-only car supports it because there are alternatives. Electric or hybrid cars are available.

There is a big difference between profit and profit margin.  Just because they are making what looks like a huge profit, does not mean they are rolling in dough and screwing everyone over.

http://smallbusiness.chron.com/profit-vs-profit-margin-10684.html

Their profit margin for the third quarter of 2012 was only 8.27%, which is not good.

@Rock Hugger:  Thanks for posting this.  After that rapey thread today I wasn’t ready to get into another serious topic.  But yeah, what you said.

@ThreeMeers:  When I have a spare 20 grand I’ll look into an electric or hybrid.  For now I drive my 1999 car.  But I’m still allowed to care about climate change, environmental destruction, the buying out of politicians, and massive disinformation campaigns.

Interesting post… I don’t know enough about this kind of stuff to make an educated comment, so forgive me… But I just don’t understand what we would do if we took Exxon down? Wouldn’t we just begin dependence on another oil company? PS all the comments are really educational…making me disappointed in myself for not being more educated in the matter!

@ThreeMeers:  I agree there are a myriad of subsidies to be angry over, but the OP talked specifically about an oil-related one. If we were to open up a “I hate subsidies” thread, then I would list out all of the ones with which I do not agree.

If your worry is about gas prices being so high, you should think about what would happen if the government stopped subsidizing oil.
