I recently had a groupon (“oh no” you all say collectively) for eyelash extensions, and being a year out from my wedding thought it would be a good time to test them out.
What I got was very professional, and well done. I loved how they looked. But grooming was a pain. No splashing water and rubbing my eyes when I washed my face. No scratching from seasonal allergies. I’d occasionally pull one out while drying my face with a towel.
I started doing some thinking, as I’m having my engagement photos taken in Australia when I visit my deployed Fiance. I figured our pics are two weeks into the vacation, and they may look scraggly by then. So, coupled with ridiculous expense and a foreboding feeling about their effects, I had them professionally removed. (Ladies, never try to remove them yourselves)
Well, I’ve gone from average length natural eyelashes to short, thinned out lashes. All the websites say that it’s a psychological illusion, but I didn’t have them for more than two weeks. Not enough time to get used to them. Applying mascara and curling my lashes just so is now nearly impossible.
So yes, eyelash extensions will shorten the life of your lashes in the cycle, causing premature shedding. It may even cause traction alopecia.
So mainly I’m telling you this as a word of advice that it will take your lashes a while to recover after getting extensions, AND to ask ladies who’ve had theirs removed how long it took for your lashes to look halfway normal again?
I’ll wear realistic falsies on our August 3rd photo session, but I’d rather not.

your lashes gow out every 1-6 months, depending on how your body decides to act, so it could be a while.

futuremrschristensen: Not all eyelash extensions are this bad. The same thing happened to me the first time I got them done. I just went to some random place. BIG MISTAKE!!!
I couldn’t get rid of them! I went to another salon to get them removed and even THEY talked about how poorly done they were. They joked about them being put on with rubber cement! Anyway, by the time they were off I had no freakin lashes. I was getting ready to go out one night not too long afterwards and my friends said I looked like something was “missing”. When they finally put their finger on it, they said I needed mascara. Well you have to have eyelashes to put on mascara lmao. I definitely learned my lesson!!
It took weeks for them to grow back. I just had to live with my bald eyes lol.

TheLadyA : luckily I don’t normally wear eye makeup, so with some lashes it’s not too far from reality.
I typically wear glasses to work and just wear foundation and blush.
It’s good to see that I may only be looking at weeks.

futuremrschristensen: I can’t justify getting them all the time so I only ever get them for special occasions. Yes, they will make your eyelashes thinner afterwards, but I only tend to notice for about two weeks. Not to worry, they’ll grow back soon enough.

OMG the same thing happened to me! My nail lady talked me into getting my done (mistake #1) I don’t know what they used to glue them on but I swear it was black weave glue. Uggggh when it came time to take them out I saturated them in baby oil and waited for them to loosen up. Ughh had chunks missing from my lashes and they was much shorter than they were to start with. I will stick to just getting my nails done there from now on.
Those semi permanent glue on eyelashes are horrible!

futuremrschristensen: Oh man…that sucks 🙁 I also bought a Groupon for eyelash extensions but didn’t go through with it. About an hour before my appointment, my sister and I were on the phone and I told her what I was about to do. She forbid it, because of horror stories like these, and told me to do more research. I’ve since sold the Groupon. So sorry that happened to you! Hopefully your natural lashes recover quickly!

Your lashes have a life span of 3 months, your oldest lashes probably came out with the lash extensions because they were at the end of their cycle. Wait a few weeks and your lashes will be back to normal. Extensions don’t permanently damage your lashes.

kelowna2014: See, I don’t buy that personally. To have lost ALL of my longer ones at once was unheard of for me. I think the weight of the extension might have had something to do with that.
foz: Thanks, they should be ok soon enough. A year out I have plenty of time to boost my nutrient intake and moisturize the lashes. And a nice pair of falsies should do in the meantime if I need them for the photos. I’m glad you didn’t go through with it. I succumbed to peer pressure from a friend, and jealously wanted to have that Bambi look all the time too. NOT worth it.

futuremrschristensen: I just let mine fall out. I didn’t get Kim K style lashes, so it was ok (and it was a groupon). I loved the look, I loved not wearing mascara. I didn’t have a hard time washing my face (I was told any water based face wash was fine, the oil based would break down the bonds.) And no scratching/rubbing. I have very bad allergies, but I’ve also had eye surgery. You can’t rub or scratch then either, so I managed to break that habit a while back.
I am absolutely doing them for the wedding/honeymoon.
I didn’t notice my lashes were any shorter or thinner than before when they had all finally fallen out. It took a long time, but since they weren’t ridiculous it was really only noticeable to me (and I did start wearing mascara on them after about week 3.)
