That’s so weird, I had (have but I don’t use it anymore) one from Massachusetts and never had any problems with it (even used it in NJ). The way it works there is you load a $20 balance on it when you get it and I had it automatically reload every month. I think you might be able to request one even if you don’t live there, check out http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/Highway/fastlane/main.aspx

hah asshats is right…. I’ve never had a serious issue with my EZPass but it was definitely a pain in my *** when I was trying to register. Any time I would call them with questions anyone I spoke to was less than helpful, like responded to my questions like I was speaking a different language. At the time my Fiance lived in Western NY and I in Eastern Ontario. We were LD and traveled almost every weekend, so EZPass would take a lot of the stress out of my trip, ie not having to get US cash together every time I traveled. I was told this would be no problem. It was so long ago I forgot how and why the issue arose, but basically I couldn’t register with my Ontario plates despite trying via phone, fax etc… so, one made up plate number later online… I got my EZPass and have been using it to this day!
