futuremrspep:  You can use any fabric you like for the altar backdrop. Sheer fabrics are often chosen because they drape so well.

Any fabric at all  that drapes well. Just aks the person at the fabric shop , telling them you want it for an outdoor altar.

I kind of agree with you about sheer, it can look a tad like kitchen curtains .

Charmeuse/satin will be shiny, crepe is kind of gauzy like that but less transparent than organza or chiffon. Tulle is also an option for draping but to make it less see through you would have to do multiple layers. I suggest going to a fabric store and wandering ti see what you like in person! I have found looking at things online and in real life can look very different!

My dad made one for me that looks almost exactly like the one you posted! The picture of it is on my computer at home I will try and post a pic soon. I got the fabric from down town los Angeles…
