I’ve been so totally impressed by the sheer talent and creativity I’ve seen on this site. You guys are really amazing!
I’m trying to figure out if I want to use fabric on the outside of my invitations. I’ve seen some really pretty silk fabric that could be really pretty, but it’s like $19.99 a yard. I haven’t actually designed our invitations yet, right now I’m just gathering information.
My question is this: Does anyone have any idea how much fabric I will need (roughly) to make around 175 average announcements? I understand that it has a lot to do with how I design them, but I’m hoping that someone has done this and can give me a ball park.

how wide is the fabric? I’m not exactly sure what your wanting to do but I think the nest thing to do would be to use a scrap of fabric or paper to figure out how much you’ll need for each invite and then do the math from there. That was you are sure you have enough. Hope this helps !!

It really depends on your design. Our invites require about 8"x16" of fabric for each piece so at 36" a yard (x 24" wide), we bought about 18 yards for 100 invites to allow for some extras. We didn’t use silk, but was able to find some nice fabric on sale at Joann’s (orig. $7.99/yd) for just $0.99/yd! 🙂

I am in the middle of creating fabric envelopes for my invitations! We used 14 yards of silk dupioni that I bought from the ebay seller fabricfreak, for $11.50/yard and free shipping. We have cut 175 envelopes and have some left over (but we are also using it for our ring bearer pillow, flower girl sashes, and some random other things). Our invite cards are approx. 6 x 8- we used the aurturo cards, size large or extra large (i can’t remember which). Artuto is great because they seller inner and outer envelopes, so I just sized the fabric envelopes to their inner envelope size and then purchased the outer envelopes.
After I cut the dupioni to the pattern, I ironed the seams in first, ran them through the sewing machine, and then ironed them again. It took my mom and I about 8 hours to cut and iron each envelope, tag teaming. I’m about 1/2 done with sewing, and that’s taken a long time also.
Word to the wise: start early because it does take a long time!!
PM if you want to see pictures or have any other questions!
