Is anybody else as frustrated with these viral posts? You know, the ones that say “Ooh bad company did this and we should all boycott them now” but a simple (and I mean simple!) Google search shows the accusation to be false. Why can’t people do a little research before reposting? DH’s aunts are perpetually posting these.
Specifically right now it’s the false one about Joplin victims who have/had DirectTV. The post states they are being told to pay a $500 cancellation fee and how we should boycott them now. For this one, his first aunt posted it and I commented stating it was false with a link to the hoax verification site. She soon deleted the post. His second aunt has now posted it twice, yesterday and today. I started to comment on both of hers stating they are false but then stopped. When will I start looking like a jerk if I keep commenting? I just don’t want other people to continue it, or worse, boycott a company for the wrong reasons.

No! I do the same thing! I hated when my friends would post some political bullshit that was false and a quick visit to google or factcheck.org proved it false.
Right now the FL drug tests for welfare applicants is going viral and I’m ready to flip out.

Wow…I’ve seen A LOT of both of those lately. I HATE, HATE, HATE that. What makes them especially annoying to me is that one friend posts it, then another one thinks its such a good idea, they repost…FORGETTING THEY HAVE TONS OF FRIENDS IN COMMON, so I get bombarded with the same thing over and over.
And anything that says “Repost if you agree”? PLEASE DON’T. Just don’t. I want to see what is going on in your life or what you are thinking about..NOT a repost of something hundreds of other people have already posted.

The Florida drug test thing is actually true, but that doesn’t mean I need to see it on my news feed every 10 seconds.

stuff like this is as old as the internet. some people will never learn. you just have to ignore them, and/or block their posts.
many years ago, I had a boss who used to forward all kinds of viral emails. one day I very tactfully told her about Snopes. after that, the viral emails from her stopped! also, she was so happy to be “in” on something that made her seem net savvy. maybe you should introduce your friends to this?
OR, if you are feeling snarky, send them one of these: http://tinyurl.com/5rescj5

I love when people re-post these viral things like this in their status and think that they are actually ‘helping’ solve the problem (such as those blanket political statuses, etc). If you want something to change, do something productive, not just post on facebook. My FI’s family does this all day and it cracks me up. And since I’m friends with them, everytime I check my facebook, I learn of a new issue they just ‘want everyone to be aware of’.

I know the FL thing is true, but I’m sick of seeing the “those of us who have jobs are forced to take drug tests so that we can pay for those who are lazy and WANT welfare and be on every drug on the planet. Repost if you agree” Ugh! Crap crap crap! Especially when almost half of drug users are people who are working full time? I need to find the link. Someone posted it on one of the viral posts and shut almost everyone up.

@Talishazwi: Agreed. I had a friend post about the fake MLK quote that some wrestler made up in regards to the death of Bin Laden. She tagged all of the friends she could. However, when someone pointed out that it was false, she apologized, like an adult, and didn’t delete the post. She had already done it, what was the point?
The think I hate the most are the stupid status updates screaming something like “OMG FACEBOOK IS DOING BAD THINGS AND IT WILL GIVE AWAY ALL YOUR PERSONAL INFO LIKE YOUR HOME ADDRESS AND BLAH BLAH THE END OF THE WORLD SO PLEASE CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS BLAH BLAH YOU’LL GET HACKED”
They happen almost every week. Mostly from the same three people.

One of my friends reposted a false AMBER ALERT about a missing kid. I went to the website, saw it was false and pointed it out. It’s like “Come on people! This is not ok.”

I’ve been seeing some of those about a Facebook group full of pedophiles that’s been on the news… this is I think the fourth time I’ve seen it posted all over Facebook.

The likejacking drives me nuts! The Sophos fb page makes me feel a little bit better to see that it drives other people nuts too! Some of the posts my fb friends fall for are understandable, but sometimes I can’t believe how stupid people can be!
Sophos link you can share with your uninformed friends:
