I highly reccomend going through a realtor and renting a townhouse or condo.  My Fiance and I live in Reston and pay about $1450 for a 2 bdrm townhouse.  That’s cheaper than most 2 bdrm apartments!  Most of them are for rent by owner or a property management company, and not only is it cheaper, you don’t have to worry about your rent going up…. (which btw, if you do go with an apartment complex, most places will raise your rent by $100 – $200 every year).  It’s free to work with a realtor to find a place to rent, they get paid by the landlord.

And just a plug for Reston/Herndon, both towns are really close to 267 which runs right to 495 and can make for a good commute.  The only problem is that it’s a toll-highway and will cost you about $1.75 each way.  🙁

Just to add – yes, go through Craigslist!  It’s a great way to find condos and townhouses for rent and can save you going through a realtor if that’s not your thing.

I usually go through homesdatabase.com and realtor.com.

I live in Fairfax and have lived everywhere in the area.

I would suggest renting a condo (but with 2k you could afford a townhouse in this area easily).  Here are some I randomly found that I know for sure are ideal/good locations:

wow that’s a great idea to rent a townhome and talk to a realtor.  I have a friend whom is a realtor if you need a name and number.  He’s pretty good.

Also, I heard geting places that are repoed are also a good way.  Reston is a good area, that’s where my man and I are going to be living since he needs to be close to work.
