What are your strategies for closet cleanout?
I piled everything from my dresser on the guest bed, counted, then I went through my closet & counted. I even counted what I was wearing and what is in the hamper (ew!) I didn’t throw out too much, but I am pretty happy with the result.
Before I did this, I thought I had no clothes but I think I have plenty to wear. Is this too much or about right? I have lots of room in my house but I don’t want to go crazy keeping things just because I have the space to store them. Also, I need a set of “Business” clothes, as well as clothes to go out in after work or on the weekends, and clothes to lounge around on the weekends.
These are the most common items after I cleaned my closet:
16 camisoles (really this is like underwear since I only wear it under something else)
13 ‘nice’ tops (for work or for going out)
12 t shirts
8 work- & season-appropriate dresses
6 gym pants (also 4 gym shorts)
5 PJ pants
5 work pants
I left out items where I have less than 5: gym tops, sweatshirts, suits, blazers, skirts, etc.

@LucyLaLa: You have a lot of camis? Do you wear them a lot? Haha Ive never had more than two or three.
I have so many more clothes than you… Im thinking I need a closet cleanout! I have about 50-60 tops, no joke… 😛

@LucyLaLa: I think it depends on how much you do laundry/how often you wear something more than once. Personally I only wear t-shirts after work (like change out of my work clothes into lounge clothes) or going to the grocery store. So they never really get that dirty… 12 would be way too much for me. But if you can wear them to work then that’s fine.
I also re-wear my gym clothes and PJ pants so I would only need about 3 sets of gym clothes and like 2 PJ pants.

I did a closet clean out in February and I turned all the hangers backwards. After the new year, any hangers still backwards (aka still haven’t been worn) are going to Goodwill. 🙂

I have at least, at least 50 SUMMER tops (work, sweaters, camis, tshirts, etc)alone. And I have way more fall/winter clothes than summer so in all seriousness I probably have around 100 fall tops 😛
I usually go through my stuff at the end of summer and then at the end of winter. If I haven’t worn it in 2 years I usually get rid of it. I lost some weight and went from a 6 to a 0/2 so I have a lot of stuff that is way too big now, but I keep saving it for when I’m pregnant. It just seems silly to get rid of it, but really its just taking up space.

@sanjessica: That’s a great idea! I’m trying to just think about what I have and haven’t worn in awhile and get rid of it. I think with anything I’m not sure on I should try something like this too.
I really need a closet clean out! Badly!! It’s insane how much I’ve accumulated. Fiance and I don’t live together right now either and there’s a good chance we may end up living in my current APT for a year while we finishing saving up a down-payment on a home together. I need to make room for him! I take up all the space right now in a pretty good sized APT.

@LucyLaLa: I am embarrassed of my closet at this moment. I probably have 10 white camis alone. I probably have 20 summer dresses (long hot summers here!) and 20 casual tank tops. I would actually say I have at least 10 of every category.
This reminds me that although I did a Spring clean up, i really need to get a little more cutthroat. My walkin closet cannot handle another new blouse.

@sanjessica: Love that idea!

@LucyLaLa: So funny that you do it this way thats how I do it – I take everything out of my closets and drawers and throw it on the bed so I have to go through it – then i donate what I dont want anymore (usually it goes to my friends for picking out then it gets donated) then i neatly put everything away. I also need to go to my shoe closet and get that cleaned out (I am a hoarder and have over 100 pairs). In fact – I am taking a “sick day” next week to do just that.

Absolute brilliant genius. I have never loved an idea so much!

I don’t know how much of what I have, but I clean out my closet frequently. I just did a big clean out, actually. What I do is go through my different sections of clothes and pull anything that I KNOW doesn’t fit. Then I pull anything I haven’t worn in a while (unless it’s seasonal) and try it on. If it doesn’t fit, it gets put in the out pile. If it does fit, I have to waffle on whether or not I want to keep it, but this time I was really good about just getting rid of it.
My out pile usually gets split into whatever I’m going to take to Goodwill and what I’m giving to my little SIL, as well. I’ve been trying to replace anything that I get rid of with better quality/not juniors stuff, too. Unfortunately, a lot of women’s brands don’t make my size/the sizing is weird that the smallest size doesn’t fit me/whatever, so I end up in the juniors section. I just replaced one of my favorite suits (juniors) with an almost identical one from Express (yay, sales), and picked up a women’s button-down shirt that actually fits.

@FutureMrsHallam: Wow ! I wish I had that many tops. I am really picky about buying them, but I am bored of the ones I have.

Yes, I do wear all the camis! But like I was saying, I just wear them under a regular top. I guess I like having the extra layer, it makes me certain that there’s nothing showing through my shirt!

@AllieBee12: 12 t shirts is too much. I am just sentimental about them. I threw out 4 or 5 that I didn’t care about. Even when I get a tshirt for free, sometimes I form an attachment. It’s not rational!

The Fall Closet Cleanout is my project for today too, but it’s like torture. I’m going to try your method of pulling everything out onto the bed and counting. I’m so bad at parting with things. Even when I haven’t worn something in well over a year I sometimes struggle to let it go.
