Hey there Bees,
I am new to the boards but I’ve lurked around this place quite a bit since everytime I am googling advice I always seem to get here for my answer.
Anyway, I have looked up gowns online for quite a while and many times I have come across Eve of Milady dresses and I’ve found my favourite…
Unfortunately for me, I am a “plus size” woman with most of my weight in my hips (they are 49″-50″ around, whereas my waist is 39″ and my bust around 45″) and even their size 18 won’t even come close to fitting me.
I was wondering if you awesome Bees can help me find some similar ball gowns? … Do ballgowns even look good on a person my size? (I am a dress size 18/20 normally.)
And one last question (sorry!!!!!!)… But is it possible to get a dress altered to have a cathedral or semi-cathedral length train if it doesn’t have on already? How much does that even cost?

That dress is gorgeous. Sorry it doesn’t come in your size. As uuyou already want it altered I suggest you keep looking for a dress that is the length you want it as it will be very expensive to add more material and lengthen a very detailed dress. Try Mori lee or Bonny bridal both have plus size collections that are very flattering.

@littlewitch: I’m about the same dress size as you, but it just all depends on your body. How tall are you? Are you long in the torso, or shorter? What’s the shape of your body etc. I’m 5’11 and long. I’m okay in a ballgown, but for me the skirt needs to not have a lot of detailing at the hips because my hips are wide.

@littlewitch: That dress is gorgeous!! Could it possibly be altered to fit??
I looked for similar dresses, have you seen the Essence style D1369? http://www.essensedesigns.com/essense-of-australia/dresses/detail/D1369 It’s not the same but has some similarities.

I’m just have an inch above 5’5″ tall, but my torso I would say is slightly longer than average. My body shape is pear/inverted triangle (big hips, big thighs, narrow waist and bust).
I’ve worn ball gowns before (prom dress) but it had a sharp cut off where the corset ended and the skirt started so it made my hips look bigger… I love ball gowns though (the princess-y look) and I’m kind of hoping for something that would ideally almost seamlessly transition from top to skirt.
Those are very beautiful designs, but nothing that really caught my eye. Thanks though! Your recommendations did lead me to Alfred Angelo and their dresses… Some of them are amazing to behold.
Has anyone tried on AA before?

Sorry for the double post by OH MY GOODNESS that dress so so unique and beautiful ;-; How do you find these? haha… I love it!
It’s even available in several bridal salons in my city.

@littlewitch: Maybe you can try it on!! My dress is a Martina Liana so I’m a bit familar with those brands. Best of luck in your search – and I hope you can post photos!! I’ll bet you will look awesome in a ballgown. 🙂

@littlewitch: Look at Pronovias!!! I’m a plus sized girl (Size 20 street clothes)…and found a gorgeous ballgown with a royal length train and had no problems with sizing! They have actually really stunning dresses that go up to about a street 26.

@littlewitch: what about something like this? I think their sizes go up to 28 (if you believe the chart).
One thing to remember about the train… when you look at pictures remember that those girls are TALL, so a chapel train on the model will be much longer on you! I’m 5’4″ so my train is almost a foot longer than the typical “chapel length” because I’m shorter.

It depends how much you want to spend. But, I would take a look at Davids Bridal on line store. Also, give a call to Kleinfelds, they have an awful lot of stuff in store. You can also give them the dress product number if you have it and they will check if they have it i stock. And the workers there can also check it anything else is simular. It so helps to talk to people that know things like this in store.

With a ballgown they don’t even take your hips in to consideration when measuring you. I am a pear/hour glass shape with a tiny waist and much larger hips and I was able to try on (and fit in to) dresses in a size that were much smaller than my hips. Hope that helps

If it’s THAT dress you fell in love with, have you considered having a replica custom-made? Then you wouldn’t have to face those problems with your size. Jasmine’s Bridal and Dressilyme seem to be the preferred China manufacturers on the bee (I’ve ordered a lace dress with Dressilyme and was very satisfied).

Awesome pointers, guys.
From one of boutiques here in Edmonton, Canada (There is a Kleinfelds in Toronto, bit it’s a 5 hour plane ride or 3 day car ride away :c), Essence seems to be between $1300-$2300, which is a decent price range for ball gowns, especially considering all that fabric! My mother will be buying the dress but we haven’t discussed price ranges yet.
If it ends up that I find a dress slightly over budget, I’d put as much of my own money into as I can… But again, Essence seems pretttttyyy affordable 😀
I had no idea! I bet you looked stunning in your dress, do you have pictures (if you don’t mind me asking)?
Thanks everyone for your help!

David Tutera for Mon Cherie “Elettra”:
I can’t find the original info for this dress (and reverse image searching yields nothing):
