I know exactly what you mean… a little off-topic (sorry, OP), but reading/hearing the news in this country lately it feels like people are taking liberties with the concept of democracy, and interpreting “majority vote selects the winning leader” to also mean “majority opinion on a social issue overrules the rights of the minority.” If that were the case, slavery never would have been abolished, the Civil Rights Act would never have been passed, anti-miscegenation laws would never have been struck down, and so on. Prop 8 in California was a horrifying example. Sure, the majority of voters wanted to overturn the same-sex marriage law. But what if the majority of voters decided they wanted to overturn the Nineteenth Amendment? Just because the majority might want something doesn’t mean it ought to be law.
