While I contine to “patiently” (haha yeah right :P) wait for the ring my boyfriend and I picked out, I thought this would be an interesting little discussion to have (sorry if there’s another recent thread like this! I didn’t see one)
Is there anyone else out there who helped to pick out their own ring, and ended up falling for a cut or style that you totally never thought you would?
For me, I had always loved rings with a lot of ‘bling’ — Halos, pave bands, etc. I was never really into one-stone rings. And yet I ended up falling head-over-heels for a solitare! The setting is a bit unique, so it’s not a 100% typical solitaire, but it’s still SO different than what I’d imagined myself falling in love with! It was such an interseting surprise for me.
Anyone else want to share what ring style they were sure they’d love, and then what you ended up with? (Pics are encouraged/welcome! Help tide me over while I wait to have some pics of my own ring eventually hehe)

I also thought maybe a halo or actually a classic solitaire but I ended up falling in love with my three-stone beauty! The profile is that of a solitaire as the pear side stones are set flush with the band while the center stone is set higher! 🙂 congratulations on your upcoming engagement bee!

I thought I wanted a cushion cut in a halo but ended up with a pear in a halo. I used to strongly dislike pears until one day I decided to try one on and fell in love with the look. Now they are my favorite shape, next to ovals.

citizenerased14 : Me! My style is eclectic and unique. I’m all about trying new things and being adventurous. I always thought I would want a raw cut stone in a bright color.
When we started shopping I fell in love with a round solitaire, about as un “me” as I could have gotten but I adore my ring. Sorry if the picture is huge, I’m on my phone.

I did! I thought I wanted a Heidi Gibson style ring but when it came down to it I fell in love with my simple morganite solitaire! Literally polar opposites! hahah

I always thought i wanted a blinged out cushion halo, not that i dont love them. I tried one on and i still loved it but then i tried on a oval solitaire and i was won over for good

bethanyjames : how funny! I thought I wanted a simple, elegant stone but I fell in love with a Heidi Gibson Leda! I actually hated that one the most but it’s ridiculously gorgeous. I hated it so much, I kept looking at it and fell in love. I would’ve done a more simple HG design, if that’s possible, like the hexagon or a Juliet. Also, I N E V E R wanted a halo, nor my husband and now have two with the Leda.

When I was a teenager I loved princess cuts. Then when I was in my first “serious” relationship I started liking round stones. I was sure I wanted a round, four prong diamond. I now have a round SIX prong moissanite and I love it!

I always wanted a 3 stone ring with round centre stone and baguette side stones. I was SO set on this…and then I tried one on and hated how it looked on my hand. I also tried simpler 3 stone rings and they all made my hands and finger look short and stubby somehow lol. I then found that swirly solitaire/halo settings were right for me and I couldn’t be happier with mine. Sorry for the humungous pic!

This happened to me with the wedding band I ordered. I was positive I would choose a plain platinum band to match my solitaire and ended up falling in love with a band that has round and baguette diamonds! The ring is 3 sizes too big in this photo so it looks a little funny in the photos, but we finally ordered our bands last week so I should have it in the right size soon!

I thought I wanted a white gold, three stone ring with coloured stones, maybe sapphire or ruby.
After being proposed to with a diamond ring I kind of fell in love with the sparkle so ended up looking at diamonds when shopping for my forever ring.
Turns out three stone rings are hard to come by and my hand really suits a solitaire. So after giving up on shops and going the custom route I ended up with this. The white gold bit is the only thing that stuck!

My husband picked my engagement ring and it was exactly what I wanted.
When it came to my wedding band I wanted a sapphire band and I HATED curved bands. When I saw the band I got with my ring my face lit up and I fell in love with it.

I thought I would get a round solitaire diamond on a plain band – timeless, classic and simple! I didn’t want anything blingy because I’m pretty casual most of the time. I ended up realising I don’t have the prettiest hands to pull of a plain and simple ring – I need something more substantial and blingy! I also realised cushion with a halo was the most flattering style for me – complete opposite of what I originally thought I wanted.

Also I was definitely getting yellow gold, but ended up with white!!!

citizenerased14 : I always thought I’d be into the plain solitaire yellow gold for life forever but I actually fell in love with the “silver” color and a halo. my family all had yellow gold so I assumed that’s what I would want when I got older. Turns out I wanted silver. And a halo lol. Although I love my friend’s pear halo which is osmething I never used to love.
