I’m seconding a previous commenter who said to change the locks.

Additionally, I don’t care if they are family, check your portable valuables to make sure nothing was stolen. If any are missing, press charges.

I would have called the cops too.  Even if you don’t press charges it’s good to have the report.  I would be getting Darling Husband to demand that the family who thought this was a good idea to clean it up and paying for anything that need to be professionally cleaned or repaired.

I can’t imagine anyone doing something like that!  At least your Darling Husband was supporting you and not his bone-headed family.  It’s good to see something good in this.

Absolutely ridiculous and cruel. How old are his brothers?!

I would have been livid. Have you checked all of your valuables, especially jewelry and electronics, to make sure no one stole anything?

I’m so sorry they had to ruin the day after your wedding like that. Frown

This is absolutely horrible!!!! I am so sorry they are incredibly immature! If that were to happen to me I’d press charges!! It doesn’t matter if they’re family or not. It’s completely unacceptable and destruction of private property!

@Cummins59:  WTF? that is terrible! That’s just mean. Why would they think that is funny! You should feel good about the limits that you are setting.

OH HELL to the MOTHA F-IN no! I would have dragged thier asses back to that house and made them clean that mess they made. And HOW DARE Father-In-Law and Mother-In-Law be upset at you and your husband! What audacity! I’d sue them for vandalism. People are saying that you shouldnt call the cops because they are family? FAMILY SHOULD KNOW BETTER! They are the ones who started your relationship with your in-laws on a bad note, they need to fix it.

i think you should have pressed charges, vandalism is NOT a prank and that way the insurance company would be able to cover your floors/any damages at least (maybe they still will since you called the cops?), that is so awful I am so sad for you :-(!!!! I would not be speaking to these people for a LONG time, if ever again, that is not in any way funny.

I can’t believe they did that to you…in what universe is something like this considered amusing or acceptable? Anyone who thinks so obviously has some serious social issues. I was so sad for you when I read your original post, but then the maddening reactions of your husband’s family make things even worse. I would not have anything to do with these people for quite some time. They can stew over the situation and think about what they’ve done, and whether or not their response was at all appropriate. It’s incredibly disappointing that his parents can’t even set a good example.

A prank is like… wrapping a toilet seat with saran wrap. This is absolutely insane! I really hope you will ask (DEMAND) that they pay for the necessary repairs.

Wow I cannot believe that.  What is wrong with his family?  They’re upset because the cops were called after ALL that they did?  What did they THINK was going to happen?  The two of you were going to waltz in, see the house a wreck and think OMG THIS IS SO FUNNY BEST DAY EVERRR I CANT WAIT TO CLEAN IT ALL THE FUCK UP YAYAYAY.  WTF.  WHAT THE FUCK?!

Also – as a side note, you really don’t have the right to “press” or “drop” charges.  Just an FYI, if you want more info you can PM me and I will explain.

OMG I am so sorry 🙁 I am furious for you.  They will be prosecuted (or not be) regardess of what you want, most likely. It’s ultimately up to the DA.

ETA: I’m glad your husband is supporting you in this! That text was good.

omg, I can’t tell you how mad I would be.  I would drag them by the hair and have them clean every last bit up.  Then I would never invite them to anything or speak to them again.  This is not okay.

Yeah. I’d totally tell them not to expect to meet their grandkids. Wow. Just wow. The pictures you posted made me tear up, and it’s not my house or my stuff! ((Hugs)) On a high note, you’ve definitely got a keeper there with your Darling Husband.
