Me and my Dad are not the gooey type, we’re the GOOFY type. I found some awesome selections from OffBeat Bride, and have spent the better part of this evening pouring over my iTunes.
My top contender right now is a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. Now, I may be the last person to get on this train, but this is an awesome cover.
Some of my other contenders include:
Paul Simon – Father and Daughter
Old Man – Neil Young
Forever Young – Eva Cassidy (and the Alphaville version)
God Only Knows – The Beach Boys
The Wind – Cat Stevens
A Slow Dance – Explosions in the Sky (love this bad, this is an instrumental song, so no way to misinterpret lyrics – you run the risk with some of the others)
Glad and Sorry The Faces ( This is my no. 2 contender. I LOVE Rod Stewart. I can’t help it.)
Landslide – Fleetwood Mac (this is classic)
Saturday Sun – Nick Drake
Smile – Rod Stewart cover from his Great American Songbook collections
Ballerina – Van Morrison (questionable lyrics)
I haven’t completely decided on one yet, but I need to soon. What has everyone else picked out?

I am also having the toughest time thinking of a song! My dad is definitely not the mushy type. He loves 60’s/70’s rock. I’d love to do an old school Chicago song (before they got into all the love songs). Maybe “If you leave me now” but I also feel like the lyrics are questionable.

God Only Knows is one of my top contenders!

- Wedding: October 2010 - Kindred Oaks, Georgetown
hmm Brown-Eyes Girl is always fun! I’d definitely go for a faster song if I were going to dance with my dad at my wedding. Especially if you two are more goofy than sappy.

my dad is a huge chicago fan, i was thinking your my inspiration… kinda lovely but the chorus is means alot to him i know

I REALLY liked that version of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” I have never heard that before. I absolutely loved it. I would be crying during your dance, lol.

thanks for the list, great picks, very helpful. Although, Forever Young by Alphaville only reminds me of Napolean Dynamite~

My top two choices are Father and Dughter by Pal Simon or Daughter by Loudon Wainwright.
We went the sappy route (My Little Girl by Tim McGraw) for my dad’s wedding 3 years ago, and I bawled through just about the entire dance. I don’t need any help repeating that on my wedding day. I can’t even listen to that song without crying.

We’re dancing to “Blackbird” by the Beatles. I think some of the lyrics are questionable, but some are right on. My dad and I both LOVE the Beatles, and I think the song is SO pretty.

@skipbobrown – LOVE blackbird! the beatles and it are such classics 🙂
my dad and i are dancing to (at least for this second) Thank You by Natalie Merchant. Not so cheesy, but still conveys the message i’m going for. A close second is Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles.
love this thread 🙂

I’ve always thought my dad and I would dance to Landslide when I get married, but I don’t think I could make it through the dance without bursting into tears lol
I think a really fun father daughter dance is “my girl” by the temptations.
Another idea I’m not brave enough to try is the ‘suprise’ father daughter dance

Were dancing to “Cinderella” by Steven Curtis Chapman. It’s a little bit more sappy than I was originally wanting, but my parents love this song.

I LOVE the girls just wanna have fun cover! I’m putting it on the back burner! Where did you find it?

We are dancing to “Have I told you lately”, by Van Morrison. I am a huge Van Morrison fan and so is my dad, so it was between this and Into the Mystic. I thought the lyrics to have I told you lately fit us a little better. I love all the choices you guys listed on this thread. Have seen “Thank you” by Natalie Merchant at a wedding where they combined the father/daughter and mother/son into one dance and it was really nice. Also love “blackbird”, might suggest that to my fiance the mother/son dance.
